Probably not. But, what would you gain if it could?

Thanks for your reply, Neil.Neil Edmond wrote:Probably not. But, what would you gain if it could?
Wifi is for internet.
Wired is for things like setting up the router.

If you already have the ethernet connection, why not use that for both?
While not recommended, you can also do both via wifi. Or, at least I have before.

I'm currently at a place where the only way to connect to the internet is by wifi.Neil Edmond wrote:If you already have the ethernet connection, why not use that for both?
Which Wifi SSID do I choose? The SSID that gives me access to the internet (e.g. CoffeeShopSSID)? Or the SSID of the router (e.g. LEDEssid)?Neil Edmond wrote:While not recommended, you can also do both via wifi. Or, at least I have before.

Yeah, once a wireless connection to the router is established, you enter the router IP address in your browser the same as you would when connected via ethernet.

So i connect to the router's SSID. But if router is not connected to the internet, I could only tinker with the router, and not surf the web.Neil Edmond wrote:Yeah, once a wireless connection to the router is established, you enter the router IP address in your browser the same as you would when connected via ethernet.

Correct.
So you want to tinker with your router while, at the same time, connect to a second router with internet access?

Yes. I'm currently in a public place (with public wifi). The router is for use at home. (There are reasons I am not setting up router at home)Neil Edmond wrote:Correct.

Oh, OK... well I've never had occasion to do something like that. Take a look at Karthi_5's response in this link:

Is that something like what you want to do?

Re: Can my computer communicate via ethernet and wifi at the same time?
I have the same question.
I have a router that is hardlined into my computer and a WDCloud attached to that with media. I get better stream quality by doing that but I us Wifi for regular internet. I really only need the Internet for the HTPC sometimes but when i do I have to Connect to the "Media router" with wifi and then usb tether my phone to give me internet access to the PC. It seems to me that it looks to the Ethernet by default for internet. I'm also interested in a work around for this so I am not wasting data on my phone..... Or how to directly attached my WDcloud straight into my computer and have it access it that way.

You could always setup two interfaces in Linux, however, desktop linux distribution (Like Mint) most applications may have issues if they don't know where to route. Basically, IMHO you need to do something like this you are making your PC take the place of an appliance (Like a firewall/router to segment different networks or something of the like). You have 2 ips with 2 subnets and 2 default routes. Yes it is possible I'd say adjusting settings and networking had better be your forte. Could you just bridge the two? Basically Bridge-utils but you'd have traffic flowing between the two. The best option would be LAN isolation. I did a little googling and came up with:

Re: Can my computer communicate via ethernet and wifi at the same time?
In further research of an academic nature. This would have to be configured via the routing table like wired gateway default route being 10.0.10.1 or the like and then your wifi might be 192.168.0.1 ?
After going through some articles I came up with the following.

Does this look feasible in the dual interface situation?

Re: Can my computer communicate via ethernet and wifi at the same time?
You can connect both but the OS will only use one, with priority on ethernet. You can experiment, connecting & disconnecting eth/wi-fi, the OS will use whatever is available.
Use this command to see how your system is connecting to the internet:

Code: Select all
ip route get 8.8.8.8 | awk -F"dev " 'NR==1 {split($2,a," ");print a[1]}'
