Ethernet won't connect on bootup

Hello, I've trawled google and the forums, and can't find the solution.
Ethernet WON'T always connect on bootup. If I unplug the cable and re-insert it, then the ethernet connects.
Wireless is FINE, connects on bootup.
Netgear R6220 router - new.
Ethernet worked fine on TPLink router, but that gave intermittent wireless issues.
Grateful for some pointers
