Wired Connection Configuration

I have something either missing or mis-configured in my network setup.

This ls Linux Mint 18.2, 64-bit.The connection is working, but the network-manager in the system tray is greyed out and reports "no connection" on mouse hover. A single click shows "Wired" and "unmanaged" with choices Network Settings and Network Connections.

Clicking on Network Settings shows a dialog window with only the Proxy setting in it. Network Connections shows a wired connection, but what is shown is not what is active, e.g. the Network Connections dialog shows a static IP address, but ifconfig reports a dynamic IP address.

I moved the SSD over to this system from another when it was LM 17.3. I lost network connectivity and then proceeded to make some changes; unfortunately, I don't remember what, but I did get networking going again with the result as described above. I have since upgraded to Linux Mint 18.2. The upgrade did not change the situation.

I'd like to get things right again, but I don't know how.
