When connecting to a server via Nautilus, system slows down and desktop goes black

Post by Knife2MeetYou »

Hello :)

I just started using linux mint cinnamon at work recently, so I am pretty new to the OS and the community alike. Even worse, I am not much of a computer specialist at all. Therefore, this might be a pretty trivial problem I ran into this morning. System specs are listed below the post.

To get access to files on our local server (via Ethernet) I installed Nautilus and used the "connect to server" function that it offers. It connected just fine, the server was enlisted within the tree structure on the left and also recognized by linux as a removable disc. I can access, disconnect from and reconnect to the server just fine. Reading and Writing is working well either.
However, the second I connect, the system slows down severly. In addition, the desktop backround turns black and cannot be changed back. Restarting the system did not change anything about this phenomenon.
I realize that this might be a network problem, although my system did not slow down when accessing the server back when I was using Windows, or a matter of communication between Linux and Windows servers in general. But since I have not much of an idea about Linux yet, I wanted to check if there is something I can do about this.

Looking forward to replies. :)

I have never experienced anything like the background turning black and such but I have to ask you what happens when you use "Connect to Server" from Nemo since that is the default file manager instead of Nautilus..

I agree with altair4, you should use nemo instead of nautilus. It sounds like nautilus is trying to redraw your desktop which conflicts with nemo-desktop. If you must use nautilus you can try running it with the --no-desktop option.
