No wired internet connection after downgrade from Kernel 4.15.0.15 to Kernel 4.4.0-124. on HP 540 G3 laptop with Mint 18.3 mate.
Kernel 4.15 was causing all kinds of problems, graphics ...desktop resolution etc. I read on this forum somewhere that the Kernel base had been changed? I have taken it off 2 other Linux mint computers for error installs and uninstalls. what a mess.
Any one know how to get Mint to see the Ethernet hardware?
Wireless is ok, just no wired.?

Re: No wired internet after Kernel downgrade
What is the result of terminal inquiry:
Code: Select all
inxi -Sn
Everything in life was difficult before it became easy.
Re: No wired internet after Kernel downgrade
Thank you for responding.
If I read this correct, The system does not recognize any Ethernet hardware? I temporarily reinstalled Kernel 4.15.0.15 and “inxi -Sn” gave the same results? Originally it was really not the 4.15.0.15 that caused problems as I should have been more specific. I was the security update to 4.15.0.20-21 that made a mess even after fixing the Linux base etc. I check the BIOS but no Ethernet option there, only LAN, and embedded LAN, and Wireless. Did not see any entru there that would have hidden that hardware from the OS.
Results of inxi -Sn (I x out this information)
HP-EliteBook-840-G3
Desktop: MATE 1.18.0 Distro: Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia
Network: Card: Intel Wireless 8260 driver: iwlwifi
IF: xxxxxx state: up mac: xxxxxxxxxxxxx

"Results of inxi -Sn (I x out this information)" Good move.
The correct request should have been inxi -Snz
My bad.
Do you see any ethernet controller using:
that is a lower case L

Re: No wired internet after Kernel downgrade
I don't see it.
Which ethernet controller is specified for your model number?
Try booting with your Mint usb/dvd .iso into a live desktop and see if the connection works there.

Re: No wired internet after Kernel downgrade
I think it is Intel I219-V but not sure.
Im on my other desktop now. will have to wait until tomorrow or a bit later to run your test.
Thank you for all the time and effort. At least wireless works great.
I have decided to purchase an inexpensive external Ethernet dongle male USB with female J45 (USB 3.0 to 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter).
Since all else works great including the WiFi, that should solve the use problem when wired connection is needed.
I just hope if the 4,15.x series Kernel is going to be the LT issued with Mint 19 that it is going to be cleaned up enough to work with my old reliable Dell 530 desktop and its quad core AMD.
