Ethernet drops out, only rebooting fixes?

Post by thesmileyone »

Bit of a PITA this as reboots can take up to 12 minutes for no apparent reason, due to "unknown program still running"

Basically I will be browsing and every so often, once or twice a day, the internet drops out.

But it still works on all my other devices.

PC is connected to router via ethernet cable so not a wifi drop out.

I have tried everything I can think of. Turning WLAN off, waiting a while and back on, nada.

The only thing that works is power - reboot. Which can take some while.

Any ideas? Thanks.

My laptop has JUST started doing this too.

It has been set up on my desk for months plugged directly into the router via ethernet.... it was working with no problems until I shut down on Oct.4th....when I woke the next morning and started it up again, the connection has been completely unstable ever since...exhibiting the same behaviour you list here.

I have numerous network locations that keep timing out so programs across my network are all showing errors..... it comes online for about 20 to 30 seconds and then drops again.

I've made no system changes to cause this... it just started.

UPDATE on mine... I unhooked the ethernet and was able to stay connected to my back up router on a different, slower service. When I switched back to the router to which it'd been connected via ethernet, this time on wifi, it basically exhibited the same problems as before. Not only that, the temperature gauge shot up from low 60c to up over 76c. Anything I pinged showed an 85% packet loss.

As soon as I shut off the wifi, the temp went back to normal. Hmmm.... it IS something with the router? hmmmm.
Next idea came to me as I was looking at the network connections interface and I saw 'connect to hidden network'. On another computer, I logged into the same router (no other computers have been having any trouble at all) and created a new, hidden network with no security.

On the laptop, I deleted all the saved networks... shut down and restarted... told it to connect to the hidden network... and BAM.... I have the fastest connection I've ever had.
Temperature gauge is running around 65c as normal.

Next step will be to see what happens when I plug ethernet back in tomorrow.

to solve those problems,

I had to finally convince AT&T that my modem is bad.....

they sent out an ARRIS NVG599 Modem and finally, after months and months of complaining, the Internet is stable here.
