[solved] After suspend - no Ethernet - cable removed

Post by Messerj-BB [Mint] »

After the upgrade to
Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia
this problem, which I had solved long time ago, reappeared: Using suspend and wake-up my system Ethernet is not working an the network manager shows:
cable removed
(but the cable and router are plugged in and working). I also tried another Ethernet cable, no change.

Searching for a solution, none of the tips worked. Some recommend to upgrade the Ethernet card driver, but I am not able to compile the drivers from Intel. My card is:
Intel Corporation 82567LM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 03).
Intel doesn't provide a ready to install driver package, just the source for compilation.

I also looked up the tips for the power-management (ACPI), but found no solution.

I found that the logical name is "enp0s25", but neither "ifup" nor "ifdown" is working. Using "ifup eth0" I get the error: "Unknown interface eth0".

I'm really lost. Any ideas?

NB: WLAN works perfect, but I prefer Ethernet cable connection on this PC.

Additional information: I observed, that this behaviour only occurs on battery. If I plug-in my power-supply, the cable connection is re-established. Looks to me that this is dependent on the power savings management.

Probably best to reply with the output of the following so ppl can see what hardware you've got:

Code: Select all

What does 'ethtool' report before and after suspend?

Sorry, I'm unable to evaluate this. Which parameter should I use for 'ethool' so see this result? 'ethool -h' presents too many options I don't understand. And in addition, so far I'm unable to reproduce/force the problem. It occurs from time to time and I didn't find out under which conditions.

My workaround: Plug in the power-supply, wait for a moment and ethernet is connected again.

Is there a particular reason you are using the 5.3 kernel?
It might be worth trying the 4.15. Remember to back up just in case and ensure you've got Timeshift enabled if possible.
When was it working before? You said you upgraded, but from 19.1 or 19.2? Which kernel was it working on before?

Well, I never changed intentionally a kernel version. I always follow the recommendation from Mint to upgrade to the new available version (Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia). I don't know the previous version number, but since I try to be always on the latest version, it could be 19.2. Other than that, I always keep my system up-to-date with the update-manager. I am unable to go back to an older kernel, never did such a system change and afraid to damage my system.

But if I remember correctly: There was a similar issue with power management (TLP) after suspend on a complete different Linux distribution. I'm using Linux for a long time, many different distributions, but always on the same hardware.

Thanks for your hints.
Thanks in advance, best regards Johannes

After several updates - including updates of the Network Manager and the Kernel, this problem possibly disappeared. Looks someone fixed it.

I therefore mark this as solved, although I have no idea what the problem was.
Thanks in advance, best regards Johannes
