Mint 19.3: No wired connection (SOLVED)

Hi there,
my Mint is 19.3 Tricia and my kernel is 5.4.0-42-generic. Is more then 30 day I have an annoying problem: every time I try to get on the net I have to reboot the pc for one or two time before I could connect. This is my driver:

If it does seem like the change is directly related to the kernel, you do have the option of switching back to the prior kernel you were using.

However, that driver seemed to cause a variety of problems for people over the years. In this thread, limited internet speed, it was slow speeds. In this thread, Internet occasionally stops working on Linux Mint LMDE 4 it was random stoppage.

At the bottom of the first page of the first thread (same link Jože provided), I posted a link to a Realtek driver. Someone in the thread tried it and found it to work better than the one provided in the kernel. Take a snapshot before trying any changes, but perhaps it will work for you as well if switching back to an older kernel does not work or is not an acceptable solution for you.

Well, when I have the problem I can't communicate with modem so internet is out of rich

I have read many messages about the problem with this driver, but this happens after I have updated the kernel as I have written. I don't remember what was the kernel in July to rollback (maybe the 5.3.0-62 ?)

Maybe you can find kernel upgrades in History in Synaptic Package Manager.

I would think it would be 5.3, but I'm already on LM20 so I don't recall for sure.

In Update Manager if you select View>List of Kernels and then click continue, you will see what kernels you have installed on your computer and which one is active. I believe you can switch back to the older one on that screen.

Just so you know, the 5.3 kernel is no longer supported. If it's the only one that works for you though, use it. Or, if you're on an older machine, try the 4.15 kernel.

Hi, I had the same problems with the same driver and Mint 19.3. The following workaround is working for me: from Network Manager I disable the wireless (I uncheck "enable Wi-Fi"). After doing so, my Ethernet connection runs flawless and at full speed. When I re-enable the Wireless, all the trouble comes back. My guess is that, at least in my case, the problem is not in the Ethernet driver but in a sort of interference between Ethernet and Wireless drivers. I'm going to open a new discussion after some testing.

Is your wireless realtek too then?

You can get WLAN and LAN adaptors with dedicated processors which usually negates this potential conflict of resources but usually they are Intel or Qualcomm Atheros based, not realtek. They also cost more for OEM to fit and take up more space on the board, which is why they use realtek more often than not for onboard ethernet.

I should now test the Wireless card when the Ethernet cable is unplugged. But -- bad news. Just while I was writing this I had another disconnection and I recovered by disabling Networking and re-enabling it a few seconds later. Therefore, a conflict might be there but it's only part of a longer story... I'm not blaming Linux or Mint of course. I just hope for more Linux friendly manufacturers.

Sorry guys all this trouble was made by the modem. Ports doesn't work properly and sometimes they connect and other (many times) not. I have decided to change the modem. This issue was discovered by our ISP.
