Now there is no ethernet internet connection...(Solved)

Post by Armstrong »

I had been experiencing intermittent wireless issues with my internet connection using Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon on an Acer laptop with the Ryzen 5 - 4500u processor. I thought we had solved that issue, but it has returned, with a vengeance, and now the ethernet connection won't work, either. Both the wireless and ethernet connections are functional. I have a dual boot, and I can connect to the internet using either from Windows 10. Furthermore, I can connect, using either wireless or ethernet, to my router when using Linux. All my other devices connect to the internet, too. It is just my laptop when in Linux Mint that has these issues. Below I have pasted the commands and results I had seen requested in similar posts. If something else is required, please let me know and I will be happy to provide it. Any thoughts before I am compelled to do a complete re-install of my sysstems? Thanks.

Thank you for taking the time to respond, but since I can connect to the internet, using both WIFI and ethernet, with Windows 10, and since I can connect to my router, again using both WIFI and ethernet, when I am in Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon, wouldn't that eliminate hardware as the source of the problem? I should also add that these problems seem to appear shortly after updates, or on the first boot after an update. However, that is just my impression. Again, thank you for the response.

I have another question: if I restore my Home directory from a backup done December 1st, when I still had internet connectivity, might that work as opposed to doing a complete re-install?

No, because the drivers aren't in your /home directory. You'd need to do a Timeshift restore.

I miised the part that Win is connecting on the same laptop. You can also try creating a temporary new user in Users and Groups. Logout and
log in as the new user for testing. New users get a fresh set of config files. If no help then booting to a live desktop environment would be my next
step. Intermittent problems can be difficult

Well, for the moment, I have a stop gap solution. I re-installed Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon, however I am using the kernel upgrade from two weeks (I think) ago. It has been a bit of an adventure re-installing all my backed up files, and its going to be a while before I get all the settings tweaked as I had them, but I do have WIFI connectivity to the internet again. I may wait to upgrade the kernel until we are beyond 5.8.0.29. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Edit to add: I am using the 5.8.0-25 kernel, and I am having no WIFI issues.

As I posted in another thread--if your hardware is working satisfactorily, and if there are no published kernel vulnerabilities (and those are really rare), stick with the kernel you have. When kernel updates pop up in the Update Manager, right click on them and choose 'ignore this package'. Updating a working kernel is, IMO, just asking for trouble. Been there--done that.

those kernel packages are an strange beast:
- on this Lenovo Laptop .. no issues
- on another HP Laptop - - constant WiFi issues . .

thus, you do have be aware of updating any of the available kernels, as suggested.

Based on other threads, I have a suspicion the problems are related to the Qualcom Atheros 6174 WIFI component. Among other things, prior to the last update I had installed, based on one response I had received, I simply changed the bin# (whatever that may be), and that solved the Qualcom issue, at that time. A subsequent kernel update undid that. Regardless, people should appreciate what an incredible resource this forum is. Without it, I would still be using Windows. When Mint dropped KDE, I considered switching to Kubuntu, but I found the forums for that OS to be nowhere near as helpful as this one. So, now I use Cinnamon. I miss Dolphin, but that is about the only downside I have found.

Dear forum members,
I'm new in this forum and I like to thanks moderators experts and forum members because I already had the chance to learn from your posts and replies.
In particular ... about this one or -very closely- related topic.

I'm using L. Mint Sylvia 18.03 (not too much fanatic about upgrading to newer releases every now and then ...). Today I discovered I've lost the ethernet port network connectivity (WIFI is Ok!) which was working just three days ago (normally using WIFI). In between these three days I unfortunately allowed a kernel upgrade from the 4.15.0-128-generic to the 4.15.0-132-generic .(I saw notes on the subject suggesting caution on this upgrade specially if not strictly necessary. Next time I will ...).

Any way ..I did some test about it and the following are the findings:

1) plugging the Ethernet cable, the network manager says: 'wired connected', I can browse the router GUI (and likely reach any other local LAN device) but no WAN access like per inxi -i command below:

Code: Select all

maurizio@maurizio-ThinkPad-X61 ~ $ inxi -i
Network: Card-1: Intel 82566MM Gigabit Network Connection driver: e1000e
IF: enp0s25 state: up speed: 100 Mbps duplex: full
           mac: 00:1d:72:92:6e:1b
Card-2: Intel PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN [Kedron] Network Connection
           driver: iwl4965
IF: wls3 state: up mac: 00:21:5c:03:0e:5f
WAN IP: None Detected! IF: wls3 ip-v4: 192.168.1.2
           IF: enp0s25 ip-v4: 192.168.1.7
maurizio@maurizio-ThinkPad-X61 ~ $
NO WAN IP assigned, no way to browse the Internet!

2) same operation but running IMMEDIATELY inxi -i command:

Code: Select all

maurizio@maurizio-ThinkPad-X61 ~ $ inxi -i
Network: Card-1: Intel 82566MM Gigabit Network Connection driver: e1000e
IF: enp0s25 state: up speed: 100 Mbps duplex: full
           mac: 00:1d:72:92:6e:1b
Card-2: Intel PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN [Kedron] Network Connection
           driver: iwl4965
IF: wls3 state: up mac: 00:21:5c:03:0e:5f
           WAN IP: 93.33.20.52 IF: wls3 ip-v4: 192.168.1.2
           IF: enp0s25 ip-v4: 192.168.1.7
This WAN IP likely was the one associated to the WIFI connection (up). For a short while I can browse the Network but then the situation reverts to the above 'None Detected!' and Net browsing ceases. (for the router the ethernet LAN port remains the one 'Active').

3) I tried to reboot selecting in Grub older kernels: No way! exactly the same behaviour.

4) I then loaded one live LINUX MINT .iso image. IT WORKED PERFECTLY, both LAN and WLAN where enabled to access the network!

5) Clearly then it was not a Hw related issue, it was not (likely) the Sw image of the new kernel update (because even the older and experimented kernels wehre now failing, but it (likely) was a consequence of that update process. I then remembered the suggestion (just read)

QUESTION:
Any suggestion on which configuration (I suppose) file might be the guilty one and what to look for?
Many thanks in advance and my apologies for such a long post for a (finally) minor issue, given the new user created is not impaired by this configuration conflict/mis-something.
