New build cant recognize ethernet

Post by Rearden »

I just put together a new system with a ryzen 5 3600 and a Gigabyte b550 Aorus Elite Ax.
My wifi works fine but it does not recognize the wired connection. I was going to try a fresh install but a tried the live USB and had the same problem.
It has a Realtek® 2.5GbE LAN chip. I cant seem to find anything else about it.

Hello, Rearden.

Please, share your system information with us. Advising on a technical problem needs as many technical details about your machine and about your Linux Mint system as possible.
So, please, share your system information with us.
You will find the detailled steps how to do so here: How to post your Linux Mint System Information (inxi report)

Re: New build cant recognize ethernet

Go back to Kernel 5.4, download the 2.5G Ethernet LINUX driver r8125 for kernel up to 5.6 from this page:
https://www.realtek.com/en/component/zo ... s-software

extract the contents and run the following command in a terminal window

./autorun.sh
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

Then you may be out of luck but post any error messages just in case something is preventing the r8125 driver from being successfully installed.

Is there any timeline for this module being incorperated into an update so we don't have to re-run the install on every kernel change?
I ask because I have a newer motherboard too with the same lan chip and have had lots of fun finding out that not everything is supported out of the box.

You'd have to ask upstream (Ubuntu) about the r8125 firmware implementation for Ubuntu 20.04 kernels, it's not something Linux Mint Developers have any control over.

Ok I did a fresh install as I had such a drastic difference in hardware between the old machine and this one I thought it may help.

So if i click run in terminal on the autorun.sh I get a terminal with this in it

Check old driver and unload it.
Build the module and install

that closes and nothing changes.

I get a log file that shows this below

Damn that reveals nothing. What you may need to try is this:

Code: Select all

sudo update-initramfs -u -k all
Then restart and see if the r8125 module actually loads.
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

Re: New build cant recognize ethernet

I think I spotted something.

Try sudo depmod -a and restart again after, that seems to be missing from the log compared to mine for the r8168 driver on the realtek site.

my logfile says this:

Code: Select all

make[2]: Entering directory '/usr/src/linux-headers-4.19.0-13-amd64'
  INSTALL /home/michael/r8168-8.048.03/src/r8168.ko
  DEPMOD 4.19.0-13-amd64
your driver's autorun.sh seems to be skipping or failing to run depmod.
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

Well you may have to wait until Kernel 5.9 is available then as apparently it contains proper support for your adaptor.

Thank you for your help.
I read about kernel 5.9 supporting this so I forced an upgrade to 5.9. It indeed did solve the problem. We will just have to see if I caused any more problems with the upgrade.
