External ethernet card not getting max speed.

Post by sylvain_cyr »

Hello,

I am looking for solution for a slow speed connection.
I do have an internet plan 500gigabits /sec and only get 89-93 on linux mint platform with external ethernet card than can handle 1000gibabit per second . My internal one can only handle, hard wire, max 100 gigabits per second. the external one is J5create ethernet to usb3.0. My usb port is 3.0

My friend on a mac, wirerless on MACOSX get a speed test to 222 gibabits per second. My kernel is the latest. The company does not have any driver for linux.

My first question is : in the latest kernel, the default driver for Ethernet, what is the maximum speed it could handle? It looks to me less than 100 gigabytes per sec. On the same machine, before in the year with windows 10. I was getting 222-5 gigabytes/s.

My next questions is: Does have linux has apps helping to boost ethernet connection?

I am out of solution, windows 10 on this laptop and my friend gets acceptable speed and in the latest linux mint, it's not. Modem and hp laptop both rebooted and tryed in different time of the day. I make sure the proper connection is selected and wifii off.

I think you need to clarify the quoted statements up there. Considerably so. Your network card is only capable of 1 Gigabit per second, and it is exceedingly unlikely that you have either an 'internet plan [of] 500gigabits' or an 'external ethernet card than can handle 1000gibabit per second', especially since the top speed of USB is currently limited to 20Gb/s for USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, and 10Gb/s for the more ubiquitous USB 3.2 Gen 2×1. In addition, you say that you "only get 89-93 on linux mint platform", but surely you are commenting on Megabytes per second, and given the overhead of TCP/IP, 89 to 93 MB/s is pretty much flat out and will almost certainly be approaching saturation point, i.e. not much more speed can be got out of the system.

So, based on all that, including your misunderstandings, and that's not a criticism, there is nothing wrong.

Do you have it plugged into a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port on the pc ? This is going to make a big difference too . Also make sure you are using a good cat 6 cable . If you have even one bad conductor it will downgrade the connection speed to 100 megabits per second which means you have it maxed if that is the case . Gigabit connection speed uses all 8 conductors .
