[Solved] Small update broke networking

Post by mathomas3 »

Hello All,

I know you all hate this type of question without logs and many other things attached... (I might be able to pull the logs by using a USB though)

anyways... This is now the second time that I have lost networking on this computer after doing an update... Last time I was able to boot into an old kernel/timeshift and it fixed the problem... This time though I have booted into 6 kernels and time shifted into all options... yet networking hasnt come back...

I am able to boot into windows and everything works fine there but just not Mint...

Ill try to pull logs tonight and transfer them via USB

It's beginning to get frustrating that to lose network connection after an update each month... this shouldnt be happening...

I sympathize with you. I have a network problem myself, although it works where I needed it to - between one of the Win10's and my main LM 19.3. Now that I don't need that anymore, I need to fix the whole thing again.

Anyway, do you use samba? I do. Do you connect to the Windows Workgroup? I do.
I am unlikely to fix your problem, but as a start for others type this in a terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz
Post the output in "Code" tags. The button that inserts these tags is marked </>

I would like to mark it solved... but the issue remains... reboot equals lose of network compatibility... even if it were just theories as to the issue that would greatly help

I sympathize with you. Networking is my number one problem with all OS's, LM included. I struggle with it often, including right now.

What does iwconfig show?
Unless you need the 5.8 kernel for a special reason, try the 5.4 kernel.

after seeing that reply...

I booted into linux for the second time... and what would you know... networking is working...

which leads me to believe that networking will only function after 2 reboots after an update... HUH?

Code: Select all

mat@Player1:~$ iwconfig

Did you ever try the 5.4 kernel? Just wondering if the 5.8 kernel is the problem.

Yes I have tried the 5.4 kernel by booting into it after and update. I have tried all the kernels that I had on my machine around 2 weeks ago when this last happened.

kinda strange...

Ill disable IPv6 and see if it happens again on next kernel update.

hello once again... guess what... networking broke after an update again... this time I was able to reboot the machine 5 times... and networking started working again... 2 days later... networking died again mid-session(I was actively working on the box)

any ideas? I dont want to roll a new OS... but if this is left unsolved... EEks!

You can try reloading the driver:

Code: Select all

 sudo modprobe -r r8169 && sudo modprobe r8169
Or, restart network manager:

Code: Select all

 sudo service network-manager restart

for the second time today... the mint was not able to play a video(I normally have YT and jellyfin loaded into chrome) but i was able to refresh the websites on both tabs but still not able to play the video... I rebooted the computer and again networking was completely dead... I tried the steps you provided which didnt solve the issue... is this a kernal issue?

I have no clue, but you might try shutting everything down, then restart your router/modem & machine.
