Shared Directory

Post by MDT » Fri Dec 29, 2006 8:12 am

Ok,
I would like to make a shared directory that all users on the same box can use to copy files back and forth. I would basically like to open that directory and all it's sub directories up to everyone on the machine (no restrictions, create, copy, delete, etc) anything in it.

I created a directory called /SHARED as root
I gave RXW permissions to all Groups, All Users, and All
I can copy files into it as any login now.

However, via the File Manager, I cannot create files or subdirectories as any user.

I can do it as any user from the terminal screen.

Can anyone help me do this please?

Sure, sorry for the delay, holidays and all. Note that I can create subdirectories off share in TERMINAL, just not through the Gnome GUI. Is this a bug in the GUI?

Code: Select all

james@mint:~$ ls -al /

I can't see where the problem is. Permissions look OK for your intended purpose. Also the fact that it works in the shell (as you say) seems to indicate that you're doing something wrong with the filemanager? If permissions were the problem then you'd get error messages (Permission denied) in the shell too ...

I've been having this probem when i mount a drive.. For example even though we had write permissions 777 on /media/sda4. and I verified that all the other folders and whatnots were modifiable. I was still unable to create a folder using nautilus. Also, like above, I was able to make a folder in my terminal. I fixed this by adding to my fstab mount .... ntfs-3g defaults, user=<users>, 0 0. With of course my actual user name. That fixed it.
