Access to windows files solved

Post by Dwood » Tue Sep 25, 2007 4:30 am

I am setting up my Linuxmint and everything is going well, but one thing I cannot do is get access to the shared folders on my XP computer via the network.

The computer itself appears in the Network with but when I try to browse the folders on it I get "The folder contents could not be displayed"

The windows shared folders do not have a password and there is no firewall to negotiate.

Can anyone help?

I need to gain access to this computer to use the printer as well as it is connected to the windows computer.
Thanks

Try to go to the Windows folders directly with Nautilus (assuming you use gnome) instead of from "Network"

Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it

some progress!

From nautilus in the network folder I can open the networked windows computer and can now see the shared drives (the entire hard disk is shared) this is more than I could do before.

However if I try to open any of the shared drives I get the same error message.

Getting closer!

Is there another step.

Some additional info.

If I right click on the folders that show up and go to 'properties'
it says
contents: unreadable

SORTED!

I am not sure why this was needed but it worked.

I changed the host name in the Network dialogue box from my own computer name to ubuntu added the domain to connect to clicked OK and ... it worked.

I did this because I was able to connect to the windows computer under the ubuntu live CD and I just copied these settings. I also copied the files from the etc/samba folder on the ubuntu live cd.
