cannot connect to the internet

I tried Kubuntu and failed to connect to the internet using ethernet. When I switched to Mint KDE, I was able to connect. However, I wanted the same start menu as Mint Gnome, so I switched to that one. On the live CD, I was not able to connect to the internet. After the first boot, I got the same problem as I did in Kubuntu. I decided to reinstall Mint Gnome. When I got back into the LiveCD for Mint Gnome, I noticed that I was finally able to connect to the internet. However, after the reinstallation, the same problem occurs.

Can someone please help me solve this problem? This is very frustrating.... =/

My computer specs are:
i7-875k
ASUS P7P55D-E PRO
ATI Radeon 5850

If you type lsmod in the terminal you should see a module for e1000. This is the driver for Ethernet. Ndiswrapper for wifi. lspci will show you the cards name and details. If it is not present you have a problem. inxi -N will give you the same specs as the others but condensed. Learn the inxi. inxi -F gives you your whole system. ifconfig will give your connection info. Good luck. If you feel the need to post these stat make sure you paste them between the "code" brackets (click the button and the courser defaults to the right spot).

Possibly the driver is not downloading from the disk. That would be weird. Or you might somehow be inadvertently disabling it. That doesn't make sense if it is the same disk you used to install. Try the commands I listed and you should find some clue there.Good Luck.

You will never believe how I fixed it. I just shut down my computer and turned it back on after a couple of minutes. =D

Anyway, I still did a grep on lsmod and could not find the e1000 module. Since I can connect already, I guess it doesn't matter now.

One problem that I am having is that I cannot create a post in the linuxmint forum. How ironic.... When I click on submit, the page will try to load for a very long time. It is like it is stuck. Does anyone have this problem? I am using Mozilla Firefox latest version. I could post on the other forums so I think the problem is with this forum. I had to boot back onto Windows just to create this post.

That's odd. when you look for the e1000 it sometimes has an e at the end. Well if you're you're on. As far as the forum not working...You said you are using the latest fire fox. Do you mean beta? That could be the problem. Otherwise maybe a onetime glitch. And the reboot is an effective tool. it fixes a lot. Sometimes things just forget to load. Good luck.

I don't think the forum problem is a one time glitch. I tried making a post before I updated all my packages. After a restart, I tried again and still no go.

sometime Forcedeath is used instead of e1000e but I'm not familiar with that one. Software not working is not really my thing But if you can make another post about it somebody can help you. Also have you tried it in a different browser? Chromium, Opera, Epiphany...? They have lots on Linux.

I tried Chromium, but same problem on that as well. I tried to make a post on the ubuntu's forum as well, but it also has the same problem. So far I have only tested on 3 forums and only one of them allows me to post. I noticed that the two forums that did not allow me to post in Linux (linuxmint and ubuntu) seems to lag a little whenever I click on "Submit" on Windows. However, after 5 seconds of loading, the request goes through. This did not happen in Mint Gnome; instead, the request is just stuck on "loading". However the other forum that I am involved in is very snappy so it takes less than a second to get my request through even on Windows. I will take your advice and create a separate thread on this issue.

Anyway, after a restart my internet stopped working again. I had to do the same trick again to fix it. Perhaps there is some bigger issue that I do not know about.

It didn't work TT

The driver version did not change (r8169) for some reason. Is the pacman command necessary? I don't seem to have it. Should I wait for the next major release in November? Or should I just run it on virtualbox? =/

You should be able to find the drivers here. Let me know if you have trouble installing them. Pacman is what they use on Arch Linux. gdebi is what I use. But i am not sure if they work the same. You should be able to right click and select "open with" then look for gdebi. If you don't have it or it doesn't work let me know And I will do what I can to get you what you need.
EDIT: Sorry I just noticed they are .tar.gz not .deb. Let me look around some more.

So I finally read the readme file and I have been doing things right. After I ran autorun.sh, I did a grep for r8168 and saw the module so it seems to works. However, if I restart, the wrong driver (r8169) would be loaded instead of r8168. Is this a bug?

It could be. Look around the forums for a reference to this and I think you should post a new thread referring to that. "Ethernet Drivers ### switch to driver### after reboot." We need to find away to delete that r8169. Hopefully that will force the software to focus on the right one but this goes beyond my comfort zone and I don't want to mess up your system. So the fix might be simple you"ll just need some fresh eyes and I think a new thread is the way to go. I've read a bug report that suggest a kernel update but that was only a temp fix. Let me know how it goes. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
