Will LM9 main edition and 64bit edition run fine on only 1 gig ram?
Won't be used to run games.
Mainly used for internet browsing, pidgin and openoffice.

64 bit Mint 9 will run with 1 GB of ram but you will not be able to take advantage of all of the more complex applications such as high end video editing, heavy duty mathematical functions, or any thing else that involves massive computational loads.

For what you describe, it should be fine. I have checked ram usage in 64 bit and found that in everyday use such as you describe, usage rarely, if ever, exceeds 750 MB. And if it does, that's why you have a swap space.

Thank you for the quick reply. Will install LM9 on that machine partitioned like this:
2G swap
12G LM9-32bit root
12G LM9-64bit root
rest(~96G) /home

I'm doing this so i can test the 64bit environment and when problems occur with some programs i can still boot to 32bit to use those programs.

I use LM9 primarily for the same apps as you (Firefox, Thunderbird, Pidgin, and OpenOffice) in a paltry 512MB on an old Dimension 4500 which works perfectly fine.

[ AbiWord is an excellent lightweight, fast, smaller replacement for OO.o. ]

I am thinking on splashing out on another 512MB RAM with the money I saved on not buying Windows 7 :-)

512MB RAM less 64MB allocated to onboard graphics. Runs fine (if a smidge clonky at times).
