mint blog user stats explained?

Post by MALsPa » Sat Aug 07, 2010 3:45 am

Can someone point me to where it's explained how the "Repartition of Linux Mint users across releases" statistics as shown in the Linux Mint blog are derived, or explain it to me?

From http://www.linuxmint.com/blog/:
User Stats:

Repartition of Linux Mint users across releases:

* Linux Mint 9 Isadora: 53% (+14%)
* Linux Mint 8 Helena: 22% (-12%)
* Linux Mint 7 Gloria: 18% (-1%)
* Linux Mint 6 Felicia: 3% (-0%)
* Linux Mint 5 Elyssa LTS: 2% (-0%)
* Linux Mint 4.0 Daryna: 2% (-0%)

My guess is the number/ratio of users that visit the Mint start page, i.e. the default home page in Firefox from a fresh Linux Mint install. For example, http://www.linuxmint.com/start/isadora/, http://www.linuxmint.com/start/helena/, http://www.linuxmint.com/start/gloria/, etc. Mint would calculate the number of hits for the start page of each version. Another way to identify user stats would be to track the number of downloads of each version of Mint, but I think tracking the number of hits to the Mint start page would provide a more accurate reading of active Mint users.

Could be. I wonder if there's an "official" explanation on how those stats are compiled?
