actually i used trial and error + common sense. bum shows you what is running, starting and you can use it to tweak as per your needs, also on another note i added noatime to the fstab entries to cut down on disk writes

I have just installed BUM and realised it is the equivalent of "msconfing" with Windows, exactly what I was looking for :)

I will make further researchs about noatime. I have no clues where to write this entry in etc/fstab.

For a lighter and faster system you could also start with a Debian minimal install:
http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/

Then install only what you need, for LXDE just run:
# apt-get install lxde-core
and go from there.
