Can't see Windows 7 pc in network after upgrade to Mint 20 [SOLVED]

Post by corkncat »

I had four Mint 19.3 computers and one Windows 7 computer on my network. After upgrading to Mint 20 I could not access the shares of any. After reading the post (viewtopic.php?f=157&t=324784&sid=37d711 ... 791b98b076) I can access the Mint pc's but not the Windows 7 machine. On the Windows 7 machine I have "Network Infrastructure" with "RT-AC1900P-38A8" listed beneath which is my router. No Linux machines. Anyone have an answer for me? Thanks

I've read that topic and I added "server min protocol = NT1" & "client lanman auth = yes" to my /etc/samba/smb.conf file and nothing changed. The Windows 7 pc doesn't even show up in my network. Here is my /etc/samba/smb.conf global settings:
[global]

## Browsing/Identification ###

# Change this to the workgroup/NT-domain name your Samba server will part of
workgroup = workgroup
client min protocol = NT1
server min protocol = NT1
client lanman auth = yes
name resolve order = bcast host lmhosts wins

# server string is the equivalent of the NT Description field
server string = %h server (Samba, Ubuntu)

# Windows Internet Name Serving Support Section:
# WINS Support - Tells the NMBD component of Samba to enable its WINS Server
# wins support = true

# WINS Server - Tells the NMBD components of Samba to be a WINS Client
# Note: Samba can be either a WINS Server, or a WINS Client, but NOT both
; wins server = w.x.y.z

# This will prevent nmbd to search for NetBIOS names through DNS.
dns proxy = true

Similar problem in my all linux network. Running v20 Cinnamon on an x201 Thinkpad I can no longer see any of my satellite boxes or shares on my Belkin router. Tried nemo, nautilus, krusader plus ssh in terminal session. They all work fine in v18 (dual boot so have tested to rule out external changes). Internet browser sessions are fine, including browser session to satellite remote web interface. Strangely the 'network' window includes a working icon to view files on the local host - ie the thinkpad.
The new warpinator does not even find the router.

@corkncat,

Open a terminal and run the following command replacing 192.168.0.100 with the ip address of the WIn7 machine:

Code: Select all

smbclient -L 192.168.0.100
Then post the output

Open nemo and in the Location Bar enter:

Code: Select all

smb://192.168.1.178/D
Just make sure your Win7 machine still has that ip address.

Now here is where things get tricky.

A dialog box opens up requesting credentials. Haven't had Win7 machines here for years but I'm not sure Anonymous will work or not if you have a guest share.

If not put in a Win7 user name and password. Worst case put in your Mint user name and password.

I went to "File", "Connect to Server", Typed in the name of the Windows PC, changed the "Type" to "Windows Share" (no password for that machine) and it opened with the shared drives showing and allowed me access to them. Thank you altair4. Is there a way to make it show up when I open "Network"? If not It's no big deal. The Windows computer is my wife's (can't get her to switch, yet :D ) and I don't need to transfer files to or from there often.

What you could do is create a Bookmark.

When you use Connect to Server and it displays the shares immediately Bookmark it: Bookmarks > Add Bookmark

It will show up under Bookmarks in Nemo / Caja not under Network.

You can rename it if you want by right clicking the resulting bookmark > Rename

Note: The icon it creates does have a "Warning" subicon attached to it in Nemo. Never did figure out why. But it does work.
