Netflix not working

Post by Ozo » Sun May 08, 2016 1:52 pm

Netflix does not work. I have Cinnamon Mint 17.3 "Rosa". I have reloaded Rosa numerous times on two different hard drives and Netflix will not play. I hear the audio and I can see the thumbnails on the activity progress bar but the video does not play.

Strange - I have netflix working on chrome on 17.3. Do you have chrome or chromium from the repositories ? It has to be chrome downloaded from google. (you can get chromium to work but its easier with chrome).

In chrome type chrome://plugins/ you should see the widevine plugin and it should be ticked. Next thing to check is hardware acceleration. Type chrome://gpu and have a look at the output. Check for any problems with the video driver.

Ticked the widevine box but no vidio. Typed //GPU and This is what I got.
Multiple Raster Threads: Disabled
WebGL: Unavailable

Disabled Features: accelerated_2d_canvas
Accelerated video decode is unavailable on Linux: 137247
Disabled Features: accelerated_video_decode
Haswell GT1 Intel drivers are buggy on kernels < 3.19.1: 463243
Disabled Features: all
EXT_occlusion_query appears to be buggy with Intel GPUs on Linux

Hi "Ozo",

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

Hi "Ozo",

Okay, you have a enough computer resources.

As was already mentioned, using Google's Chrome is the one of the easiest ways to view Netflix. If yours is not working properly, then "purge" it, and re-install it from their website (you have to have a 64-bit computer, and you do).

Open a console terminal, type in, or copy & paste, each line below one by one:
sudo apt-get purge chrome

Another great way to view Netflix and other streaming websites is to install and use one of the excellent multimedia server players, like "Kodi (xbmc), or Plex Home Theater, etc...

I tried to purge Chrome but got this;

ceo@Rosa ~ $ sudo apt-get purge chrome
[sudo] password for ceo:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package chrome
ceo@Rosa ~ $

package is called google-chrome or google-chrome-stable.

I prefer to use package manager (sudo synaptic) gui so I can search on name of package.

Yes it could be true that Netflix may not work everywhere due to restrictions if you are accessing it for free.
I am using netflix kodiaddon obviously thats free but I use a vpn with that not because I like it but because it is needed. Rest is all good and all smooth.

To answer your question, no.
This is an old post and I can not even remember the solution to that problem but it is ancient history. That was 17.3 Rosa and I am using the latest 18.3 with excellent results. It was resolved in Rosa however.
