Samba share - can view directory but not contents!! => CLOSED

Post by waynea »

I have set up a samba share based on USB storage on my router. It works OK, and in Network Services > Windows Network > Workgroup I can see the files I've told Samba to share.
BUT...I can see nothing on those folders at all, when there are music files which work perfectly if I plug the storage into by Laptop (Mint 18 MATE). When I try to click the file I get the error 'unable to mount location - file doesn't exist.
I get exactly the same behavior BTW on the streaming box on my TV - share is found, but I cannot access the actual files. This suggest there is something wrong with my config...

This is the '/etc/samba/smb.conf.template

Code: Select all

[global]
	netbios name = |NAME|
	display charset = |CHARSET|
	interfaces = |INTERFACES|
	server string = |DESCRIPTION|
	unix charset = |CHARSET|
	workgroup = |WORKGROUP|
	browseable = yes
	deadtime = 30
	domain master = yes
	encrypt passwords = true
	enable core files = no
	guest account = nobody
	guest ok = yes
	invalid users = root
	local master = yes
	load printers = no
	map to guest = Bad User
	max protocol = SMB2
	min receivefile size = 16384
	null passwords = yes
	obey pam restrictions = yes
	os level = 20
	passdb backend = smbpasswd
	preferred master = yes
	printable = no
	security = share
	smb encrypt = disabled
	smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd
	socket options = TCP_NODELAY IPTOS_LOWDELAY
	syslog = 2
	use sendfile = yes
	writeable = yes
Can anyone see what I'm missing?

Hi Deepak - thanks again! Doesn't really help though as the samba server is running on the router ,and we can tell that its working fine because
- LInux Mint can see the shares
- my streaming box can too

Just that neither can get to the files on them..!

Have you tried saving a file from your MInt box to one of those (high-level) shares? It would be interesting to see what the results are.

If I try to save a file I get the error 'There was an error copying the file into smb://openwrt/. - Operation not supported by backend'

I'm going to mark this as closed, although technically it isn't. The minidlna server on my router works fine and I can stream from that...

I Googled your error message (above) and got quite a lot of hits.
This Link might have some good info.
