Private Internet Access VPN Kill Switch

Post by ttjimera »

I am using LM18 together with Private Internet Access (PIA) VPN service. The PIA App comes with VPN Kill Switch feature which essentially block internet access should the VPN connection dropped. When I tried to turn this switch on, however, the app issued a warning which says "Please only enable VPN Kill Switch if you really need it. The Kill Switch requires modifying the Operating System's network settings and can in rare cases causes connectivity issues."

I was wondering if any PIA users in this forum have used the Kill Switch before and whether there was any problem. Also does anyone know what kind of modification the Kill Switch does to the network settings and the connectivity issues that it may cause?

Thanks

Yes I have used it and No, no problems, except if you want to surf without PIA, you must uncheck the kill switch and save it.

Just a few days before one of my friend asked me to find best free virtual private network with the best switch off features since there had to be a lot of people who are also looking for the best free VPN with kill switch feature, so I would like to suggest them that kill switch is a premium feature that may not be available for free, so I suggest PIA as the best VPN for the best kill switch feature vpn.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, OldTech, I have tried the Kill Switch without encountering any problem. It works as expected. No surprises so far.

I have digged around on the internet for information of how PIA Kill Switch is implemented. In https://www.reddit.com/r/torrents/comme ... m-comments it is mentioned that the Kill Switch works by temporarily removing the default gateway and DNS IP. It seems that this method had led to some inconvenience for some whereby at times one may need to manually repair the settings or restart the computer or network interface in order to restore the original network settings. But as one commenter (I assume a representative from PIA) explained, this design is deliberate. To quote:
As outlined throughout this discussion, our killswitch option disables your local connection to prohibit any possibility of data leaking in the event of a sudden disconnection. This will require manual repair or a computer restart to restore; this is intentional, and i'll explain why. If the system could automatically repair it, it would try to do so shortly after the disconnection occurred; if it did so while a download/torrent/etc was trying to stream, it would immediately restart the stream, and would be broadcasting your real IP and DNS information, which defeats the purpose of our service. The killswitch is setup to ensure absolute security, so the system cannot auto-repair the connection, and thus leak your real info.

I had trouble using a previous version of the official PIA client for Ubuntu with Linux Mint 18 (no "tray icon" etc)... Now I'm really happy to know the Ubuntu's client is working!

Thank you for the fast response! :D

I had problems with PIA original Kill Switch feature; external connections to pc running VPN are blocked. like Samba and http server would not accept external connections while VPN is up, and Kill Switch is enabled. Without Kill Switch and VPN up, everything works normally.
So I wrote small took to prevent selected application from running if VPN disconnects. You can check it out here:
