You've got Vista Ultimate! I have a feeling this is going to get complicated.

Let's go for the obvious first:
NetBIOS over TCP disabled -- no workgroup available
In Vista: Go to Control Panel --> Network & sharing --> Manage network connections. Right-click the adapter icon --> Properties --> Internet protocol version 4 --> Properties --> Advanced --> WINS --> Enable netBIOS over TCP/IP.

You can always go back to the default if that doesn't work.

The other thing I would test is to disable ( temporarily ) any firewalls ( both in Windows and Linux ) and see if networking works.
Please add a [SOLVED] at the end of your original subject header if your question has been answered and solved.

Once you've sorted out the Vista config issues you may also wish to consider installing smb4k on your linux machine, it's about the most mature
SMB client there is for Linux and gives some excellent features missing in other SMB clients.

To install, open a Terminal and type this command:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install smb4k
Mike.

Solved: I simply turned off the firewall. I went to System>Administration>firewall configuration, then set actual status to enable, then by default...allow.

I know this brings up security issues, but at least it works. I seen some posts stating to change , make rules to allow NFS and netbios-ssn and allow TCP 139, but that didn't work for me.

It's not a good idea to completely turn off the firewall. I would rather recommend Mint developers to add some specific rules to the basic firewall configuration so we can easily enable samba sharing.

So simple yet so far reaching (and a bit unpredictable). 4 x shared directories on LINUX, 1 could be seen and accessed from XP, 3 x could not.
Turn off the LINUX Firewall (well really turn it on and set to allow) and all fixed. Thanks for your help

This topic is a bit old, but better to revive it than create a new one.

I'm very new at linux, and i have chosen a mint to start learning things around.
I'm affraid i have stuck at beginning!

Mint is installed on my laptop wich i use @home and @work.

When home, i can see network called NETA wich contains 1 XP computer and 1 Edimax NAS based on linux. I have no problem with that network.
When working, i am in a network called NETB wich contains 5XP computers, WIN7 computer and Ubuntu computer, and when browsing network servers folder i get the Failed to retrieve share list from server error. Funny thing, on ubuntu computer everything works perfectly. I can see shares when i run Network Servers folder, don't have to go Network Servers => NETB.
I can access ping all of the computers in network, and i can access them via Firefox when i type: smb://xxx.xxx.x.x but that's not what i want to do!

I have installed allmost every samba package suggested on various google search, firewall is disabled and when enabled, when i filter samba, same error.

Here is findsmb result:

Code: Select all

                                *=DMB
                                +=LMB
IP ADDR NETBIOS NAME WORKGROUP/OS/VERSION
---------------------------------------------------------------------
192.168.1.5 PRINT_SERVER +[	DAMJAN ]
192.168.1.11 INTERNET [	DAMJAN ]
192.168.1.100 SKOOSHA [	DAMJAN ]
192.168.1.100 SKOOSHA [	DAMJAN ]
192.168.1.100 SKOOSHA [	DAMJAN ]
192.168.1.100 SKOOSHA [	DAMJAN ]
Print server is also a NAS based linux and internet is ubuntu machine!

Hope some1 can help with this problem. Thank you all!
