I can't get samba to work:

I've been using Mint for over 4 years, but I'm still a slow learner. I have a website: https://pickfetish.com. It is dedicated to guitar/instrument picks.

What are you trying to accomplish with samba? What is your goal?
What version of Mint are you running?
can you post the output of :

Code: Select all

sudo apt list samba*
Ryzen x1800 Asus Prime x370-Pro 32 gigs Ram RX480 graphics
Dell PE T610, Dell PE T710
- List your hardware Profile: inxi -Fxpmrz

I am simply trying to use a simple share with other computers on my home network, none are windows, but in the future there might be windows systems. Right now only one other computer, a laptop with 18.2 KDE Mint

If there are no windows computers presently on your network then just use NFS for file sharing.

Can that be fixed, and what is the best tutorial for NFS setup?

I do want to fix this, I had samba-config working for a while but after reboot it wasn't working. I tried uninstalling using software manager and reinstalling to no avail.

For NFS, is this tutorial advised to use:

https://www.wikihow.com/Share-Files-Bet ... -Using-NFS

And would you or somebody help me troubleshoot Samba anyway.

I understand that NFS is a "better way" that it is fast and build for Linux, but I might end up needing Samba and I want to fix the problem while it is fresh in my mind what happened.

I just installed 18.3 Cinnamon before this and used my Aptik backup of 18.2 KDE.

I am also having a problem in another thread with downloading the list of desklets, that is throwing up a network error while other things ARE updating. In case these are related.

Here is an excellent and very thorough tutorial for installing and configuring Samba in Linux Mint:

https://windowssecrets.com/forums/showt ... ws-network

Keep in mind that you only need to install Samba on the machines which will be sharing resources, such as hard drives and printers.

That's just it, when I get to step 10 and try and give my password to start the samba config window, it seems to accept my password BUT nothing happens, Samba/config does NOT appear, nothing happens.

Edit:

I fixed it! I had to figure out some stuff, how to purge, move files, change passwords and restart services, but a person here had the trick

https://askubuntu.com/questions/762705/ ... g-to-16-04

removing "security = share" from the lines in the samba.conf file (I commented it out).

Working good now!

I'm not a fast learning, but I can learn. I still am pretty new to Linux. When things work, they work and work well in it. The few hassles are worth the trade-off from the Redmond garbage.

I dont fault you for not knowing. You have the incentive to learn and that means a lot believe me! So many people out there that dont even know how to 'copy and paste' it makes me sick. lol...

I started back in the beginning days of linux with slackware to run a bbs (billboard system - Im showing my age ). I have been with it since win98 came out and I got upset that M$ was charging money for just software fixes. I have always learned the hard way too. It just takes some dedication and time to get it down but when you do its sooooo worth it!

I just got done working on 'Redmond Garbage 10' and I share your opinion on it :)

If you have any more problems or questions I am almost always available. Even if you want to bounce things off another brain. Sometimes it helps and can lead you to an answer quicker that way :)

Keep up the good fight!

I have moved on completely from Windows to Linux Mint. However, for those occasional "must-do" things that I just can't do in Linux, I have installed VMWare Workstation Player in Linux Mint; and I have set up two VMs: one has Windows 7 and the other has Windows 8.1. If I simply can't do it in Linux, I do it in one or the other VM. I prefer Windows 7; but there are only two years of support left for Windows 7; since there are five years left for Windows 8.1, I also installed 8.1.

A very nice thing about running Windows in a VM is that finally, Windows is the step-child, not the host! (I really enjoy saying that!)

There is only one thing I haven't been able to do by this method: Install my Canon Selphy CP910 printer as a wireless network printer. First of all, there is no Linux software for this printer. And Linux can't find it on the network so as to try to install it. I installed the software in my Windows 8.1 VM, but Windows couldn't see it either. Probably because my Windows VM does everything through the Linux gateway, and what Linux can't see, neither can the VM. I had to install it to Windows 8.1 as a USB printer. It worked for that VM session. But after I closed the VM, then reopened it later, I could no longer print to the Selphy as a USB printer.

I ended up printing from my wife's Windows 8.1 laptop.

This is about the only thing I haven't been able to do. I say "about", because I haven't tried everything.

All in all, I'm really glad to have made the move to Linux Mint. I'm never going back.
