[SOLVED] Intermittent internet

Post by shom_ronnie » Tue Jun 26, 2018 10:33 am

Ok so i am a new linux mint user. I have been having this problem with the internet, first i thought it was a wifi issue, did everything posssible like turning off power management, turned off ipv6 reinstall driver also reinstall linux mint altogether. Doing so wifi seems stable, but now there is a small problem, internet works absolutely fine for long periods, then all of a sudden stops for a while, wifi remains connected no other changes occur, it keeps buffering then comes back after a while. Now this is annoying at times when you are in the middle of something. Any ideas how to deal with this issue, as i am using chrome, uninstalled firefox if in case it had something to do with this.

no other changes occur, it keeps buffering then comes back after a while.
This is the part of your question I find interesting and, maybe, indicative.
  • What's buffering? Define what you mean by buffering? What pages are you visiting that cause this problem? Or, is it not related to pages visited but occurs with every/any page?
  • At what time of day is this problem occurring? Is it morning, evening, etc? Is it repeatable?

No particular page. For example say if i open a new tab and type something in google, the page opens immediately. But when the prob occurs, it wont open, it goes round and round, i have to wait for a long period of time before it opens. It can happen at any time of the day no fixed time. Like now if i have to access any page the first thought comes to my mind, will it open. If it opens it works fine, if not then i have to wait. Another interesting thing is the wifi speed sometimes drops. My usual internet speed is about 60mbps on the cable. It comes to 50 or so in my wifi on my devices. Sometimes on this machine it goes down to 10mbps, then slowly picks up speed as i repeatedly do speed checks

A hack might be to restart the network

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager.service
Network: Card-1: Realtek RTL8101/2/6E PCI Express Fast/Gigabit Ethernet controller
driver: r8169 v: 2.3LK-NAPI port: 4000 bus-ID: 07:00.0
A fix might be to internet-search

Code: Select all

linux realtek driver r8169 "mint 18"
or

Code: Select all

site:forums.linuxmint.com linux realtek driver r8169 "mint 18"

Upgrade to kernel 4.15 series see if that helps.
If it does not work you may need a newer driver found here:

The hack looks fine, although i can do the same if i flip the wireless button. It reconnects and internet starts up fine. And the fix seems to be for realtek, i am on broadcom as i will only be using wifi for internet purposes. And it said about updating kernel, just check my kernel, its already on the recommended one. So that doesnt really help. I want to solve this issue. Will be thankful if anybody can help

That is why you have to install the new driver :) also reboot to the old kernel and download the driver then you can install it via gdebi -- good luck.
P.S. the new driver has a patch for kernel 4.15 and above. Which will already be in mint 19 when it's released.

I am not rolling back to prevois kernel, will try to install the driver first with a cable. Could you please help a little more please as there are three files showing up on that page

Ok go to this page https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/amd6 ... e/download and download this package

Code: Select all

bcmwl-kernel-source_6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu4_amd64.deb
once it's downloaded right click on the package and select open with gdebi and follow the prompts to install the package.
once installed issue this command in a terminal

Code: Select all

systemctl restart NetworkManager
and wifi should work.

Seems to be working flawlessly this far, although its only been half a day. But this far noticed no lag or drops. Will be monitoring for some more time and then update.

If you do notice slow downs or drops there are a few other things you can try, but I would not do them unless the problem persists.
1. turn off wireless power saving management. This page tells you how to do that. https://unix.stackexchange.com/question ... ermanently
2. disable ipv6, click on Network manager Icon select network settings and then ipv6 tab choose ignore (note if your using mint 19 cinnamon the procedure is a bit different.)
3. change your routers channel so that it uses channel 1,6 or 11 or other less congested channel.

It seems fine, checked in every possible way, doesnt seem to drop. Just noticed a bit of a latency after coming back from suspend mode but that too within tolerable limits. It performs great. Thanks for your time and effort, i think for the first time since coming to linux mint, i can safely say wifi and internet is working flawlessly. And any suggestions on the kernel that i installed, should i stay on this or go back, if i stay on this one, should i delete the previous one.
