Looking for tutor; NAS home media server

Thinking of building our own home media server.
But I’m clueless.
I’ve read tons of articles and watched plenty of videos but would like to chat with someone experienced for walk thru if possible.

HI Frldyz,

Why would you use NAS for a multimedia server? There are much easier options for installing and using a multimedia server.

It would help to know more about your system's multimedia setup and the other computers and devices you want to share the multimedia with. Are all the computers to access the media server Linux or various operating systems? If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt of the computer to become the media server, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

@ home:
multiple desktops, laptops, android and ios products.

Would like to consolidate all my files ( movies ,pictures, videos taken from smart phones etc ) to one central location instead of having mutiple hard drive, external hard drives etc...

Would also like to start streaming movies to TV's.

*** From the videos I've watched on youtube ie: Linus It sounds like a Home Media NAS ( something from seagate or synology ) would be ideal.

If I understand correctly after everything is in the NAs I can then access it via @ home in wifi range or remotely via tablet o smart phone.
It would be great to access my movies via tablet or smart phone when not @ home. ie: miles away.

I would also like to have a RAID 1 so all my files will be mirrored.


Am I not looking in the right direction?

The media servers can all do that without installing NAS or NFS or Samba or SSH (openssh), read the link in my last reply.


I was mistakenly thinking "NFS" versus "NAS" in your post, my bad. From what I read "NAS" in the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM) is just an Audio Server versus NFS which is an actual file server and NAS for any and all files and overkill for just a media server, but great for a true multi-user networking environment, multi-user databases, raid access, remote backup, etc...

NFS (Network File System) allows you to 'share' a directory located on one networked computer with other computers/devices on that network. The computer where directory located is called the server and computers or devices connecting to that server are called clients. NFS is perfect for creating NAS (Networked Attached Storage) in Linux/Unix environment. It is a native Linux/Unix protocol as opposed to Samba which uses the SMB protocol developed by Microsoft. The Apple OS has good support for NFS. Windows 7 has some support for NFS.

NAS="Network Attached Storage", i.e. something that has hard drive storage and makes it accessible over the network, which implies having some computational power. However, modern NAS appliances offer much more than just disc access.
