SSL problem

I'm running a web application on my laptop for development purposes. It's a very new laptop, so I'm bumping into new issues that seem like configurations that I missed at some point. The one that I'm getting dealing with SSL is coming from Zend:

Zend_Http_Client_Adapter_Exception

    Unable to Connect to ssl://mallhistory.org:443. Error #0:
Searching around, a lot of responses said that something openssl needs isn't installed, or a problem with certificates. Does that look like the right approach? If so, can you point to things I need to install, or where to look for more information?
