I recently bought a Buffalo NAS, my windows 7 computer immediately picked it up, no configuration required. My android phone picked it up after installing the buffalo app.
I can't get my Linux Mint 19 machine to see it.
Where do I start on getting it to work?

Does the NAS have web access? I can log in to mine from Firefox and activate file sharing - but I do not use file sharing much and never leave it active.
