Update to the update: I have "solved" this issue by connecting the vpn from the command line, which works fine, is stable and has stayed connected days now with no issues. There is one other issue I forgot to mention before: the icon for the network manager is invisible. There is a blank space where the icon should be. When I click on that space I get the network manager menu as normal. Uninstalling and reinstalling did nothing, even after downloading fresh packages. Any ideas on how to fix this? It's a minor thing, no biggie, but it's annoying.
Update: I completely uninstalled Network Manager and Openvpn, for real this time. Network manager reverted to what I suppose is the default for this system: a simple menu showing connections with no options to add or edit. Then reinstalled everything, set up the vpn, still the same behaviour. The connection is in the menu, but when I click on it, nothing. No error, no failed connection, nothing. The openvpn service is running now.
I will post my system info at the end of this question. When I installed Mint I installed the Gnome network manager and Openvpn, set up my connection and everything was fine. Worked, no problems. After not using it for a few days I tried to connect and it literally...does nothing. The connection is setup, the menu option is there in network manager but when I click on it nothing happens. No error message, no attempt to connect, nothing. When I did a status check from the command line systemctl says that the Openvpn service is running and enabled with a PID of 903 but when I look at Task Manager there is no PID 903 running nor anything named Openvpn. Yes, I did enable "show all services". Here's where it gets really strange. I completely uninstalled everything: Network Manager, Openvpn and everything associated with the intention of reinstalling; rebooted....and nothing had changed. My vpn was still listed in the connections menu as if I had done nothing. I can't find anything online or in this forum about anything close to this.
Also, if you would be so kind: if you see any other problems in my setup please feel free to point them out and suggest a solution.
If you need any other info let me know what and what commands to use. Or if anyone knows of a viable alternative to this setup, give me a hint. From what I can find though, this is what pretty much everyone uses. Thanks in advance.
