/etc/hosts file is ignored by browsers

Post by andrsenpetrov » Sun Jul 21, 2019 8:43 pm

Hi, everyone!

I am trying to setup 192.168.0.1 siriusmurkus.abc.edu host in the /etc/hosts in order to access wifi router admin panel by typing siriusmurkus.abc.edu :)
strange domain name

additionally:
- /etc/nsswitch.conf there is the following order - hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns myhostname
- /etc/resolv.conf - added 192.168.0.1 siriusmurkus.abc.edu
- checked there is NO PROXY set in Network Settings and in browsers

Actually, siriusmurkus.abc.edu is pinged successfully in Terminal, but when I type the same name in Firefox or Chromium it says this site can't be reached.
On Windows machine it started to work right after I modified hosts file, therefore it might have something to do with Linux Mint in general, not with etc/hosts file
I don't know

Any ideas, what else to try?

My guess is you need to reboot for the hosts file to take effect.
So I got this bright idea. But when I tried to grab the light bulb, I did not hurt my hands as expected from a warm bulb, because it turned out to be one of those LED bulbs.

You don't need to reboot but you may need to restart the browser/clear it's cache. Browsers use DNS caching, e.g. chrome://net-internals/#dns.

What I don't understand is the choice of host name. Is this a new form of link spam? :P
