DNS issues on mobile phone hotspot

Post by tc683 » Wed Aug 07, 2019 2:09 am

Hi.
Apologies if this is discussed anywhere else on the forum but I haven't been able to track it down.

I am using Mint 19.2 cinnamon on a laptop. On the home WiFi the connection is fine.
I also have an (android) mobile (cell) phone which has a hotspot set up on it, to allow me to work away from the home WiFi by using my phone's 4G connection.
When I connect the laptop to the mobile phone hotspot I have trouble resolving DNS. I can open a terminal and ping 8.8.8.8 successfully so I know the connection works. However, if I ping google.com, nothing happens. Similarly, the browser fails to successfully look up addresses, and Thunderbird does not connect.

On the home WiFi, these things work fine.

I have a second laptop, also running mint 19.2 cinnamon and connecting to the same hotspot works perfectly.

How do I reset the network/DNS/DHCP configuration to the default settings to get this to work?
