SOLVED - Can't get Samba working

Post by iain_33 » Sat Aug 17, 2019 10:28 am

I've got an Android phone and tablet, and found out I can access the files on one from the other, with the File Manager+ app installed on both - going into "Access from PC" on one sets up an FTP service, which I can access remotely from the other. I'd like to set up such a service on my laptop (Mint 19) to access its files from the phone or tablet.

I've installed Samba, set up the password with sudo smbpasswd -a iain, restarted, installed caja-share, and shared the folders I want to access, but can't get it working. When I try to add a remote location in File Manager+, select Local Network, it finds nothing. I've got my laptop's IP address from ifconfig and put this in manually (the dialog box here is titled SMB which makes me think it should work with Samba), with my username and Samba password, but it times out. I've tried another Samba client, but still no luck. I've got a terminal app on my tablet, I pinged my laptop's IP address and it does respond, but having no luck with Samba.

Any suggestions please?

Update - out of interest I tried to connect to another Samba share in Caja, entered 127.0.0.1 and my username & Samba password, and my shares come up fine. Seems I just can't access them from outside. Do I need to change something in the firewall?

To check if UFW is active, run below command to output UFW status:

Code: Select all

sudo ufw status
If UFW is active, you will need to run below command to create rule to allow samba in UFW:

Code: Select all

sudo ufw allow Samba

Further update - I went into gufw and turned it off, tried File Manager+ again and it connected instantly.

I've found where my problem lies - how do I solve it (other than turning the firewall off every time)?

Good to hear that you got that working.

If issue is resolved, please edit and add [Solved] to subject line of first post.
