Is wlan0mon the same thing as mon0

Post by llinuxmenace2211 » Tue Oct 08, 2019 7:30 am

The short question I have: Does mon1 function essentially the same as wlan0mon? I purchased an adapter with a RT2870/RT3070 chip-set in it and I am currently trying to follow a basic tutorial but am unsuccessful to for reasons I cant comprehend. First issue is that what I run ifconfig I don't have wlan0 but from my research this is normal being that I am running a newer version of Ubuntu than 15.whatever that they changed it to wlp2s0. No big deal but when running sudo airmon-ng start wlp2s0 here is what I get:

bart_simp@Linuxfartbox ~/bin $ sudo airmon-ng start wlp2s0
Found 6 processes that could cause trouble. If airodump-ng, aireplay-ng or airtun-ng stops working after a short period of time, you may want to kill (some of) them!

PID Name 973 avahi-daemon 974 NetworkManager 1072 avahi-daemon 1178 wpa_supplicant 1459 dhclient 1688 dhclient Process with PID 1459 (dhclient) is running on interface wlp2s0 Process with PID 1688 (dhclient) is running on interface wlp2s0
Interface Chipset Driver

wlx00c0caa7eaf1 Ralink RT2870/3070 rt2800usb - [phy1] wlp2s0 Broadcom wl - [phy0]mon1: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
The next thing I tried was what was replacing wlp2s0 with wlx00c0caa7eaf1 which seemed logical but that is where I couldnt follow the tutorial step by step. so heres that output:

bart_simp@Linuxfartbox ~/bin $ sudo airmon-ng start wlx00c0caa7eaf1

Found 6 processes that could cause trouble. If airodump-ng, aireplay-ng or airtun-ng stops working after a short period of time, you may want to kill (some of) them!

PID Name 973 avahi-daemon 974 NetworkManager 1072 avahi-daemon 1178 wpa_supplicant 1459 dhclient 1688 dhclient Process with PID 1459 (dhclient) is running on interface wlp2s0 Process with PID 1688 (dhclient) is running on interface wlp2s0

Interface Chipset Driver

wlx00c0caa7eaf1 Ralink RT2870/3070 rt2800usb - [phy1] (monitor mode enabled on mon1) wlp2s0 Broadcom wl - [phy0] mon0 Ralink RT2870/3070 rt2800usb - [phy1]

Now the tutorial said that the new interface should read wlan0mon but in my situation I believe I should use mon1. My question is that should I from this point on just substitute mon1 for wlan0mon for the remainder of the tutorial? I would serenely appreciate anyone's input on this matter as this stuff is very new to me. Thanks
