DNS lookup frequently fails

Post by lonely_llama » Wed Oct 09, 2019 7:58 pm

Initial caveats/disclaimers:
  1. I stay in a shared accommodation with a wifi router that I do not own/administer - so I can't view or change any settings there.
  2. Only on my Mint 19.2 Xfce x64 HP laptop do I face this problem - my phone and tablet don't. I don't have any other devices.
The problem
Every once in a while (sometimes a couple of times an hour), DNS lookups fail. My browser shows 'Looking up <hostname>..' or if I'm trying to run an apt update, it gets interrupted with a network error, and I have to disconnect and reconnect to the wifi AP.

I have already tried alternate DNS servers but that doesn't help either. My ISP is TPG internet, Australia.

What else can I try?
