smbclient shares not working after upgrade to mint20 [solved]

Post by bpeary »

After upgrading to 20 from 19.3 I get the following error for my pre-existing addresses:

Could not display "smb://10.39.74.151/bruce/"
Error: Failed to mount Windows share: Invalid argument
Please select another viewer and try again.

I'm using Nemo 4.6.4 and cinnamon
smbclient 2:4.11.6+dfsg-oubuntu1.3

From the instructions you should have followed:
The upgrade overwrites files in /etc/ with default configuration files. You can restore files indivually [sic] by the Timeshift snapshot you made prior to upgrading.
Your smb.conf is affected by that condition.
It's pronounced kad-eye-cha, not kada-itcha.

I was given a list of options during the install, and I took the default to keep the previous config. Was that a mistake?

2 questions:

[1] What operating system is running on the server you are trying to access and at what version?

[2] Are you getting the "invalid argument" error when you:

** enter smb://10.39.74.151/bruce in the Location bar of Nemo?

** Or some other process.

The reason I ask: Samba and Mint20 : viewtopic.php?f=42&t=322404

I've gotten it to work.

First I tried replacing smb.conf with the old one: same errors.

Then I saw what was presumably the maintainers version, smb.conf.ucf-dist. When I copied that into smb.conf my shares worked.

Thanks everyone.

Good detective work.

Hi,

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem since last Saturday, when I upgraded from 19.3 to 20.

I understand that the solution to this problem implies restoring some files related to samba from the timeshift backup that it's created during the migration process. My problem is that I'm rather an end-user than an expert (upgrading was kind of thrilling experience for me, having to follot that set of instructions!) I would really appreciate that someone would list the steps to follow and the precise files to replace.

Otherwise I'll revert to 19.3, since now I cannot access a network drive that is vital to my daily work.

THANK YOU!!!

Bleriot.

A suggestion: Start your own thread and post the output of the following command:

Code: Select all

testparm -s
I don't quite understand the "restore the smb.conf from the backup" solution to this issue. Despite what many think - despite what it says in the Samba documentation - smb.conf is not THE samba configuration file. It's a list of overrides to the default setting. smb.conf has remained the same for years. Maybe this is just a Mint "upgrade" issue.
