Unable to access shared folders under W10
Good morning all.
I come back to you after a new problematic.
Now that my pc has regained its wifi.
I would now like to allow him to access the disks, folders and files shared on my pc under W10.
However. Whenever I try to access my networked PC, linux displays this message: '' obtaining the server's share list failed: the network has broken the connection ... " I do not understand at all what is going on. All my other Windows PCs can easily access network folders ... Thanks in advance for your help

unfortunately I cannot edit the smb.cfg file because I do not seem to have the right to do so even though I am the administrator of the machine.
For the other commands in the following options, they seem to not work but I certainly realize them wrong.
I'm sorry, I'm quite a novice in the twists and turns of linux.

xed admin:///etc/samba/smb.conf
Re: Unable to access shared folders under W10
oh thanks! works far better like that!
Re: Unable to access shared folders under W10
My file is edited, however what is the equivalent to be done on W10 because, to my knowledge, what is supposed to be accessible is fully accessible with other PCs.
once my linux pc and my box have rebooted, the previously visible folders in the Windows network folder but inaccessible no longer even appear. I am quite confused.

Re: Unable to access shared folders under W10
Open up
Command Prompt
on the Win10 box. Then run and post the output of the following commands:
Code: Select all
ipconfig | find "IPv4"
Code: Select all
hostname
Code: Select all
net share

All other windows pc can get access easily. I thought it 'd be the same with my Linux
Re: Unable to access shared folders under W10
Open Nemo - your Mint file manager - and in the Location bar enter the following:
Do you gain access?
This should also work:
Code: Select all
smb://192.168.0.14/Musique
This should also work:
Code: Select all
smb://MEDIA-CENTER-SALON.local/Musique

yes both methods work !! Thank you. After entering my username and password I access the desired files.
On the other hand, they remain inaccessible by the traditional method ...
network -----> Windows Network -----> Workgroup ----> media-center-salon -----> unable to mount location: obtaining list of
Server shares failed: network broke connection during reset
Will I have to enter the addresses of the files in nemo each time I start the computer? Or is there a way to make access to these files permanent?
Re: Unable to access shared folders under W10
You could create a bookmark to that location in Nemo and have the system remember the password forever but bookmarks to network locations don't work very well in Nemo.
They work in Thunar.
Or you could do a cifs mount to the share: Automount Samba Shares with CIFS:

Re: Unable to access shared folders under W10
Ok, thanks for your answer and help. The cifs thing sound a little bit complex to me. I'll try to bookmark the location. Passwords are already set to forever remember. Maybe rythmbox will keep the location open by itself ?
Re: Unable to access shared folders under W10
A cifs mount isn't as hard as it looks from the HowTo. I just tried to cover as many use cases as I could.
If your system was my system I ( altair ) would do something like this:
I would create a mount point at say ... /media/Win10Musique:
Then I would do a temporary mount just to make sure it connected:
If everything worked I would unmount the share:
Then add a line to the end of /etc/fstab:
A link labeled Win10Musique would automatically show up on the side panel of Nemo. When selected it will mount the Win10 share per the instructions in fstab without requiring sudo. You can use the same link to unmount.
If your system was my system I ( altair ) would do something like this:
I would create a mount point at say ... /media/Win10Musique:
Code: Select all
sudo mkdir /media/Win10Musique
Code: Select all
sudo mount -t cifs //MEDIA-CENTER-SALON.local/Musique /media/Win10Musique -o username=xxxxx,password=yyyyy,uid=altair
sudo umount /media/Win10Musique
Then add a line to the end of /etc/fstab:
Code: Select all
//MEDIA-CENTER-SALON.local/Musique /media/Win10Musique cifs username=xxxxx,password=yyyyy,uid=altair,noauto,user 0 0

Re: Unable to access shared folders under W10
Waw sounds great, I'll try that right now!
But, what's the uid? I guess it's user ID but I already entered my username and password, I know nothing else . Is it a thing that I create only in the command line or does it exist somewhere on my W10 or Linux computer?

Re: Unable to access shared folders under W10
First: I cannot spell. So it's not
Second: If you are going to pass your Microsoft account credentials and those are something like blzebub@hades.com it's:
So it's:
And the uid is your own username on the Mint system.
Note: You might want to remove your actual Microsoft account credentials from your previous post - unless you just made that up.
pasword
it's password
Second: If you are going to pass your Microsoft account credentials and those are something like blzebub@hades.com it's:
username=blzebub,domain=hades.com,password=yyyyy
So it's:
Code: Select all

Re: Unable to access shared folders under W10
I'm glad you were passing by, I didn't know the answer
Yggdrasil232 - as well as doing a cifs mount following altair4's guidance, you can also permanently mount your shares by editing a file called
fstab
. It lives in /etc
and is read by the system when it boots - whatever it finds in there it mounts. That is how I mount my NAS. For example, the music folder on my NAS gets mounted at /media/music
