LM 20.1 no network connection except through phone tether

Post by Cyclists All Around »

Hello everyone,
I'm sorry to bother you with a common issue: I cannot connect to the internet except through phone tethering (Y! Mobile in Japan). Through my phone I have downloaded drivers and updates. I'm using Linux only, no Windows OS.
I've tried to connect through ethernet and wifi, networks that work with all other devices in house. I've unplugged and replugged them many times in the past week. I've tried to type the router numbers in, but I haven't made progress.
My motherboard is ASRock B550 Steel Legend.
Other advisors on this forum have asked for the following info via the command inxi -Fxxxrz:

No, I entered what you wrote, but what I got back was

platypen@Platypus-Penguin:~$ mokutil --sb-state
SecureBoot disabled
Platform is in Setup Mode
platypen@Platypus-Penguin:~$ ^C
platypen@Platypus-Penguin:~$

which I cannot make any sense of

Ok, secure boot is disabled as it should be. Let's see:

Code: Select all

 rfkill list all

I'm sorry, I put that command in the box, but got nothing in return. Just. Nothing. A new line

Ok, I'm not sure what best to do here. I see no mention of a wifi card present & you have no ethernet driver. You could probably try the 5.8 kernel on that newer machine, but I don't know if it would solve anything or not. Wait for someone who can give you better help.

I see, thank you so much for considering my situation.
My kernel is 5.4, but I have had the same network connection issues since I got my system booted about 2 weeks ago.
I don't know if it's a faulty MB, or if I've made a silly mistake, or if Japanese internet is a problem...
Like I said, with mobile phone tethering, I can connect to internet smoothly, but direct ethernet connection doesn't work, and wifi doesn't connect either.
I'll go to Tsukumo Electronics on Sunday with my whole set up if I can't get through this--my 1-month warrantee is going to wear out!

Might as well try the 5.8 kernel in Update Manager, View, Linux kernels. It will either help or not.

Thank you, I tried Update Manager, but I was told I was up to date. I'm not sure how to press M. Manager for more info...

In Update Manager, there's a tab on top that says View. Click that, then Linux kernels & install the highest 5.8 kernel & reboot.

Thank you for your patience with me. Okay, I've installed and run the kernel 5.8.0-50, but unfortunately no change in internet status. Can only connect with tethering.
I've tried manually entering my SSID from the router, both wired and wireless. I've tried both with and without colons between bigrams. I don't know what a BSSID is, so I've left it blank and put in the MAC address. I'm just. confused.

I suspect that machine might be too new for Mint. It could be that the 5.9 kernel might get things going, but it isn't readily available in Mint as yet. If you want to try installing it anyway, see here:
