Home VPN works on Windows and not on Mint... sorta [Solved]

Post by jrod »

I'm able to connect to to my VPN at home on both platforms, however I can't do much beyond pinging clients from the mint machine. everything works fine when i'm connected with my windows machine. i feel like i'm missing something obvious in the connection setup from linux but i'm really not sure what that could be. any help would be appreciated.

You should check to see if your provider supports Linux. Here's an unvetted list of providers courtesy of Mother Google. I don't use vpns myself.

It's not a VPN provider, its just my home VPN so I can tinker with stuff while i'm on the road. (Valheim Server, PiHole, etc.)
I just enabled the VPN server (pppoe) on my home router (Asus AX88u) with very basic settings so as not to add any additional complexity.
But i did just solve my own issue. I decided to go scorched earth and blow away the VPN connection in Network Manager and rebuild it from scratch using all the basic default settings like I did before. Only this time, I decided to click the 'advanced' tab and noticed that MPPE encryption was left unchecked. Checked that box and now i'm able to connect just fine and ssh to all my doo-dads without issue. Sometimes just voicing your problem let's you take a different look at things. "rubber duck debugging"
