Folder Sharing From Mint to Windows 7 (wirelessly)

Post by leo_mancini »

Hi all,

I have recently installed Linux Mint (was previously using opensuse).
Problem: Unable to access my linux machine from my windows computer.
Steps: I have:
1. Installed Samba
2. Within Samba (GUI application) have added the folder I would like to share (my video folder).
3. Under server settings (basic):
Workgroup: workgroup (this is the same name as the Windows domain)
Description: %h server (Samba, LinuxMint)
4. Under server settings (Security)
Authentication mode is user
Encrypt passwords: yes
Guest account: no guest account.

From within windows (using version 7).
1. Loaded windows explorer
2. clicked the network button

Result: My Linux PC icon does not display from within Windows Explorer

*Special note* from within Linux under 'places' and 'network' I am able to see the laptop name.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Well, at first glance you appear to have done everything right, but I noticed I had to log out and back in to get my Linux PC to show on the Windows Laptop.

Failing that ensure Windows is set up correctly in regards to having Network Discovery enabled, you've set the Network to Local and your firewall is letting it through.

From the Mint machine you might want to post the output of each of the following commands:

Code: Select all

testparm -s
net usershare info --long
hostname
smbtree
I know it's a lot to post but the answer is most likely in there somewhere.

Your netbios name is too long rendering it invisible to the rest of the lan. By default Samba will use the machine name as the netbios name that it broadcasts to the lan and it has to be 15 characters or less in length. Yours ( paul-System-Product-Name ) is 24.

The easiest way to fix this is to explicitly tell Samba what name you want to use on the network:

Edit smb.conf as root:

Code: Select all

gksu gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf
Add the following line to the [global] section of smb.conf:

Code: Select all

netbios name = paul-system
It doesn't have to be that exact name but keep it 15 characters or less in length please.
Then save smb.conf and restart some services:

Code: Select all

sudo service smbd restart
sudo service nmbd restart
If you are using Debian based Mint the command is:

Code: Select all

sudo service samba restart
Note: Everytime you restart these services the local lan has a fit and you need to wait a few minutes ( seriously - like about 5 minutes ) for things to settle down before you can try sharing files again.

You may have another issue but see if this fixes it first.

Hi

Thank you for your advice in changing the netbios settings (My name did appear to be long, but I didn't realise this would have an affect).
Yes this did work. As soon as I restarted the samba services It has worked. There have been a few hiccups, though I'm working through it.

Thank you so much!

WOW! Thanks so much! I could not figure this out 3 months ago and had some free time and gave it a shot today. I must have tried 100 google searches and at least a dozen fixes before I came across your fix. It only took a few minutes and everything works like a charm. For some reason my login name was combined with the motherboard model and it was 17 characters long. Now I'm all good. Thanks again!
