Kickstarter Campaign / Donation Drive

Post by anandrkris »

http://community.linuxmint.com/idea/view/3982 - Your views and votes on the idea please.
In the recent past we have seen some successful crowdsourcing Linux initiatives (latest being Openshot video editor) that were enthusiastically backed by the community.
I am not elaborating on the usage of money raised. Clem would know best on exact and immediate requirements but could be used for various initiatives such as introducing new features, professional support teams, marketing campaign, new recruits, new dedicated servers, dedicated team for documentation and tutorials, etc.
Sufficient corpus funds will help Mint team to work on the project releases without worrying much about finances.

I feel Kickstarter will also give good visibility to the Mint team and project.
Very similar to this idea http://community.linuxmint.com/idea/view/1695 but thought Kickstarter is more a one-off initiative.
I know this could be discussed at forums as well. Anyways, just shooting it here as well. Will delete it if moderators dont find this as an idea.

Why I strongly feel - Mint needs to raise money. Especially, to procure the hardware required for development.

We’ve begun re-porting graphics tablet (wacom) support back into Cinnamon. The affected packages are cinnamon-control-center, cinnamon-settings-daemon, and cinnamon itself.

As none of us has a tablet to test with, if anyone is interested, and running Mint 16 or some other distro with >= ~Gnome 3.8 they can do the following:

Not sure, if it is off-topic….

Its a pity that development team does not have necessary hardware. With great work, you guys are doing you’re entitled to a hardware farm. :-P

Perhaps Mint Project should consider raising Money (crowdsourcing – kickstarter, indiegogo, etc) for hardware procurement – can be an one-time exercise where funds do not impact design – as Clem would want it. :-)

If you think of Kickstarter you should also think of the backer rewards. What can you give people in return when you already give them free software every 6 months? :)

LOL. Fair point - Mint team's love. :D Perhaps the usual blog announcement page listing the backers.
