Linux Mint is merging with PCLinuxOS, Mepis and Slackware to form a single distribution called Apriloofix. The resulting distribution will be slackware-based but it will use a combination of APT and RPM for its package management. It will only support the X86_64 architecture and come with a reimplementation of Java Desktop in Mono as its main desktop environment. Also, the project will be acquired and sponsored by a consortium called "Visual Linux", driven by Sun and Microsoft. The ambition of Apriloofix will be to gain significant market share by migrating current Ubuntu, SUSE, Fedora and Mandriva users and by providing them with an ideal platform to dual boot with Microsoft Vista. Apriloofix will be fully compatible with Vista thanks to the fact that it will use the same kernel, only the user will have the impression to actually run Linux.
I have no doubt this will be a tremendous success and I really look forward to work with Steve Ballmer on that one. I'd like to thank Patrick, TexStar and Warren for sharing the same vision and for joining forces in doing what will be the Linux of the future. Linux Mint is dead, long live Apriloofix!!
