Slow Response of Mint 12 LXDE

Postby eric2069 » Mon Jun 04, 2012 9:07 am

Hi everyone,

I'm pretty new to Linux, but otherwise an intermediate user =)

I decided to check out Linux because I want a lighting fast experience. I can't stand when the system is slow / unresponsive. Now I've made several attempts, first with Ubuntu 12.04, then with Mint 12 LXDE, and the thing is happening: the system is sluggish, much more so than it is with windows xp / windows 7 on the same computer.

The computer is fast enough to handle windows 7 well, but Linux is sluggish? How can this be? It's a 1GB RAM DDR2; Intel Core 2 Duo E6000

Any ideas, suggestions?

Thank you!

Check with top to see what is using the CPU and/or the RAM.

To speed up Mint 12 LXDE check the PDF file in this page: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=96465

@eric2069 - When nunol suggests this:

You might want to set up Conky on your system to do that. Just a basic one will do! (If you search around, you'll see some amazing setups for it.) I am using LM 12 LXDE on an old Toshiba Satellite Pro A100, and it runs just fine -- better than fine, in fact. But I have noticed that the System Monitor itself seems to consume a fair bit of CPU (which strikes me as odd), which is one of the reasons why Conky has been so useful for me.
