Linux Mint 18 Sarah : power off hang

Postby pingolin » Mon Jun 12, 2017 8:52 am

Hi,
when I try to power off, the process starts, then
black screen with following messages appears :

Linux Mint 18 Sarah pingo.System-Product-Name tty1
pingo-System-Product-Name login:

the only way I found to move from that screen is to press ctrl-alt-canc ;
the system restart, not powered off.
Then I need to press button on PC to power off.

Now the issue occurs every time I try to power off the PC;
at beginning it was just sometimes, I mean power off was ok,
without any manual change.

Anyone can help me on that?

Thanks and BR/pingolin

Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);
- make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- Copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz

(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

Try this:
Update Manager - panel: View - Linux kernels
Install the latest kernel from the 4.4 series. Then reboot.

Hi ,
from update manager , I chosen to upgrade everything ;
unfortunatly the screen goes in locked mode and I was not able to retrieve the session;
restarted PC. I have dual boot, linux mint not starting anymore,
windows ok.

On linux mint black screen with mouse;
typing ctrl-alt-can I can go just in degub mode gdb, but
I obsolutely don't know what to do.I'm completely unaware
of what can be done.

Any hint? Need to format everythiing? Data are saved on another disk.

:-(

After some debug; I discovered that kernel modules was corrupted during package upgrades.
I just reinstalled linux mint serena 18.1.
Honestly this time , the installation was very diffult;
I was not able to make dual installation (win & linus); always only windows was seen.
I just loaded only linux mint, and it was not visible from pc, even if installation was ok.
At the end I used partition ext4 and I indicated manually the memory for file sytem and it has been
installed correctly.

But now again the same problem: power off hang........... :-(

In linux mint serena 18.1 there is possibility to choice in a lot of
kernel;
the actual in use is 4.4.0-53

and there are some more nws for 4,4 , the last one is 4.4.0-79;

then there are also kernels 4.8 and 4.10.

Which one to be used ? Any problem if I try for more than one going from lower (4.4)
to higher (4.10) version?

An update;
I noticed that after shutdown , the black screen with msg is kept about 1 minute and
then PC goes power off.
It would be acceptable, but when I tried againg to power on the PC, again black screen with same msg like
when shutdown; this time no way to startup, and i need to reboot (ctrl+alt+canc) and linux mint
starts normally........

Further update;

at shutdown , just waiting a while (about 1 minute) and PC is powered off;
this is always the case , no hang.
About the next boot of PC; randomly it can happen that the next power on
can hang; until now I powered off and on the PC about 7/8 times and
the hang at power on occured 2 times.

it looks acceptable at moment.
