Re: Nemo -- Bogus Names?!?!?!

Linux has adopted a great many standards from Windows. Why a system feature would be rejected simply because it comes from Windows architecture is a mystery to me. MS DOS began as a ripoff of CPM86 and MS Windows began as a ripoff from IBM and DESQview and Santa Cruz Operation.

Rejecting good methods is not a way to succeed.

In summary; desktop entry files are text files describing information about an application such as the name, icon, and description. These files are used for application launchers and for creating menus of applications that can be launched. File managers can show the application name and icon in place of the file name. Some file managers (like Nemo and Caja) show the application name and icon everywhere, others (like Thunar) show the file name everywhere except if the file is on the Desktop (for menu launchers placed on the Desktop) and others (like Nautilus) always only show the file name.

Use a file manager that meets your wants.

Different users have different wants. For example there was recently a Xfce user that wanted Thunar to show the application name and icon everywhere and not the file name, because they use desktop entry files to organize information — putting directory shortcuts, browser bookmarks (also desktop entry files) and application launchers for related things in one directory to have them all together for easy access. The exact opposite of what topic starter here wants.
