CPU total speed or single thread or GPU speed by application?

Post by Petermint »

What applications benefit most from CPU total speed versus CPY single thread speed versus GPU?

For may latest notebook, I selected a processor with the maximum single thread speed because I have one single thread application chewing up lots of time. After that, I do not know what might be important in the future.

GIMP runs functions single thread per open image. When I had a slow processor, I opened several images and kicked off several transformations at a time. My new processor is so fast, each transformation is finished before I can switch to a different image to start another transform. There are some other single thread oriented applications where the new speed makes a difference.

My next project will probably to edit more video as my recent camera also produces excellent 2K video. Has anyone watched the system resources while editing video. Do any video editors use all the cpu threads? Is the GPU more important than the CPU for video editing?

Not when editing but when transcoding.

If the GPU supports the codec being used then the GPU should kick in, otherwise the CPU is used.

As for single core performance, my understanding is that it applies to one core out of all those available, not one particular core, so don't be misled by that. When a core needs to run with the throttle full open, it will, but only one core will go to the absolute maximum.

One core runs at the boost speed until it is limited by heat. I notice for some things, it will run at maximum for several actions then slow back down when the fans wind up to noisy. This afternoon, I transformed 20 similar images one at a time. Most were near instant. The last few were slower and noisy.

This is a notebook so there is no room for a Noctua 140mm cooling fan. :D
