X Server runs the graphics on Mint. I only know of Ctl-Atl-Backspace command which restarts it. I do not yet have ideas of what else might cause an explicit kill or server shutdown. With no graphics, Cinnamon will crash.

Code: Select all

X connection to :0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
Gdk-Message: 18:52:18.825: tray.py: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.
It's getting late for me. I will go back through what you've posted more tomorrow.

In which mode are you currently running cairo-dock? The info I found seems to indicate you should be able to run in GL mode, but you would have to experiment to see if one mode is better (less crashing) than the other.

The only thing I could find regarding to the X Server crash messages seemed to be related to remoting into the computer which I do not think you are doing. (Unless you are doing something unusual through the browser?)

We could check the X Server log to see if there is anything unusual there. Use this command in a terminal to upload the X Server log file to termbin:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999
It will return with a url address that you should post in your next reply.

That file looks as I would expect to be.

Are there any crash reports in the System Reports app? I didn't think of that earlier, but there probably should be. (Mint does self-clean those on a weekly basis, so if you check right after the 'cleaning', there might be none.)

If not, the only other place I can think to check is dmesg. If you run dmesg -T | tail -n 200 after the next crash, it will give the last 200 lines of the journal. Maybe that will capture what is happening that is knocking X Server down.

If there is no crash report, then it likely Cinnamon did not crash. Did you get knocked back to the login screen this time? Or did all the browser windows just close?

The dmesg data appears to indicate your system ran out of memory (oom) and shut down Chrome in an attempt to stay stable.

Code: Select all

[Wed Oct 27 20:45:22 2021] Free swap = 0kB
[Wed Oct 27 20:45:22 2021] Total swap = 2097148kB

[Wed Oct 27 20:45:22 2021] Out of memory: Killed process 25729 (chrome) total-vm:25522136kB, anon-rss:2671020kB, file-rss:0kB, shmem-rss:8kB, UID:1000 pgtables:7924kB oom_score_adj:300
I counted ~35 chrome processes in the list. I do not know how chrome is designed, so I have no idea how many tabs/websites were open.

I do not know enough about the process differences between Chrome and Chromium to know if Chromium might be "lighter" on resources. Your repo list, as well as dmesg, indicates you installed Google Chrome which is a slightly different product from open-source Chromium.

Code: Select all

           Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list
           1: deb [arch=amd64] http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/ stable main
Linux Mint's default swap is a 2GB swap file. Increasing that might also be an option to consider.

Yes, it went back to the login screen. And I was using Google Chrome. I believe it's done the same with Chromium, as I have both. I'll try using Chromium again if you think it will help. How do I increase the size of the swap file?

I am not aware of there being any significant difference between the two.

I am starting to think you and I may not be referring to the same login screen. If Cinnamon kicks you out, there should be a message somewhere. The elapsed timespan in dmesg you posted is such that if Cinnamon crashed it would have been in there. It is not.

If Chrome kicks you out and you lose the keyring connection to the Internet then you may only be logging back in to it and not to Cinnamon. I do not have Chrome and am not sure how that works.

Going back through the posts in this topic, it seems more likely this is browser/internet related and not Cinnamon. It seems your system is running out of memory and swap and that is causing the system to make emergency shutdowns of certain processes in order to keep running. That may be why it is "random". It is dependent upon how much you have open.

I would guess you are going to need to increase your swap file size, but I do not have much experience with that and do not know what might be a good recommendation for size. I routinely have upwards of 20+ tabs open on Firefox with the same 4GB of memory and 2GB swap file that you have (and an older Celeron processor) and I've never run into an issue. However, you may be running other programs in the background that I do not run.

Maybe someone else will be able to make a recommendation.

To clarify, it's bringing me to the Login Window for Mint. The one you can adjust in settings under Administration.

99% of the time when it happens, Chrome is the only thing open. Most of the time I'm using my mouse wheel to scroll on a web page.

A bit ago, I removed a Smooth-Scrolling browser extension. I have noticed my RAM is lower now without it. Is it possible a stupid browser extension is the culprit?

I added the System Monitor applet to my panel so I can observe any memory spikes.

Also, I changed my swappiness from 60 to 20.

EDIT: Just crashed again... this time while scrolling in the Applets setting.

Is there any indication in the Cinnamon session-errors file or the errors.old file that Cinnamon stopped and then restarted? I do not recall seeing that which is why I'm wondering if something else is involved.

 Maybe. I do not run with any browser extensions so I do not know how they might affect RAM or cpu.

It's my understanding it is usually best to leave it on the default. You can read more about changes here Why most people recommend to reduce swappiness to 10-20?.

My recommendation was to increase the total swap size from 2GB to something larger.

Okay, this is curious. Computer crashed about 5 minutes ago. Went to terminal and uptime showed it's been up for nearly 4 hours.

The session-errors file had the same X Server crash as we've seen in the past.

Are you running GIMP when any of this is happening?

I do not understand how you could go to terminal if the computer is crashed. Would you not have to restart the computer if it crashed?

I use Gimp nearly daily, but it's never crashed while using it.

I went to terminal after logging back in and it showed nearly 4 hours uptime.

GIMP is not a light-weight program in terms of its process and memory needs. You do not have a very powerful computer, so the more programs you run simultaneously, the more likely you are going to run into issues. If you are running GIMP, then I would think you should definitely increase the size of your swap file.

I read what you wrote the first time. If your computer crashed then you would need to restart the computer. You would have to wait until it powered up and booted and then you could log in. Are you saying that is what happened? If so, I have no explanation for how the system could tell you upon logging intthat it had been running for the past four hours.

We will have to see if someone else has some ideas.

Gimp running has never been a problem as far as memory goes. I've even gotten it running without issue on a Chromebook with lighter specs than this computer.

I'm probably using the wrong term "crashed". It sends me back to the Login Window. I just think that's weird that it does that and then uptime tells me it's been up all along. I'd like it to stop doing whatever you'd call what it's doing.

If X Server crashes, then you are taken back to the login window. However, just because you lose X Server (which runs the graphics) does not mean the operating system has stopped running. Mint is still running and you can interact with it in terminal mode.

Think of it as a 3-layer cake. Mint is the bottom layer, X Sever is the middle layer, and Cinnamon is the top layer. If someone comes in and swipes at the middle layer, that it likely to take out the middle and top layers, but the bottom layer is still there. By logging in, you rebuild the middle and top layers of the cake. However, the bottom layer was never affected. It is still the same bottom layer which has been running for several hours at the time you logged back in again.

As I mentioned earlier in this topic, it is very odd for X Server to crash. The only indications I was able to find earlier were related to SSHing (remoting into the computer). I see mention of an ssh-agent in the dmesg you posted earlier.

Code: Select all

[Wed Oct 27 20:45:22 2021] [ 1530] 1000 1530 1508 8 45056 106 0 ssh-agent
However, I think that may be part of Mint's underlying programs and not something special you are doing. Therefore, it would be running on everyone's install and others are not seeing this happen.

You are not using the Ctl-Alt-Backspace combination in any programs you are using, are you?
