Sudden battery drainage - from 8 to 2 hours in one hour

Hello,

I have issues with sudden HUGE battery drainage that started few days back. Ordinary I get roughly 8 hours of work on battery only, but since 7/8th of Dec it is more than halved. I suspected kernel, but was not right. (still have installed 5.11.0-41, but booted to -40 to see if that was the cause)

UPDATE >> Looks like drainage is only happening while lid is closed. On my return way home I have kept it open, just for test, and it went from 87% to 73% (rn) for roughly 50 minutes.... says 4:27 more... which is a bit on lower side, but it have not lost 5+ hours for one hour drive <<

From what I was able to see, battery is still fully operational, as at time it was purchased, so that excludes it. There must be something eating up the power, but looking at processes, have found nothing obvious.

Only new thing installed is KColorChooser but that should not have such effect.

Bought this laptop exactly for long lasting battery, and not having that is seriously compromising my work. Any clues what to do/check/change are more than welcome.

Looked promising this morning when I booted -40 but it went down quite hard (from 8 to some 2 hours of life) within 60 minutes (daily commute). Lid was closed and I always use low brightness (0-3%) since I do have well lit environment. (there is no poweroff for screen, just brightness 0-100%)

Saw other discussion similar to mine, that it is not powering off correctly, and if I have not misread ... also issues with lid control, but my setup in that section is simply Do Nothing :) so that should also be a dead end. And yes, it is shutting down normally, do not have to use power button.

Just another update, to keep thread alive :)

There is definitive issue with 5.11.0-41-generic kernel. Booted it today... and it was eating up power like mad. When battery monitor was showing 1:45 remaining power, I have rebooted to 5.11.0-40-generic, and it is now (some 30 minutes later) showing 2:41 time remaining.

Will remove 5.11.0-41-generic and see how it goes.. specially with lid closed.

I recommend to give the latest kernel of the 5.13.x series a spin. Who knows....

Will do that too... looks something related to power/performance is screwed up ... it is simply unreal how aggressive power throttling is working as of recent, up to a point when it is affecting text typing... like on an old PC... where you type.. and then expect letters to show on the documents.

It is quite better on 5.13.0-22-generic but still feels like power control is pushing 100% on any activity, regardless of actual need for that much power.

Feels like there are only 2 power mods... standby and full power ... and before latest updates it was using enough power for undergoing tasks...

So my best guess is power throttling is screwed somewhere...

Just an update... still on 5.13 ... drainage (power throttle) is still on MAX on any type of activity, but now in 2 latest versions system will not poweroff ...

It is just hanging after last command, and I have to press and hold power button to actually turn it of.

Best thing to do, is to revert to an older kernel that didn't have those problems. Then delete the newer kernels and blacklist kernel updates. The practical security risk of running an older kernel is usually low, so acceptable.

Agreed... but now I have lost count what kernel was last without any issues :D

Maybe just revert 2 or 3 last updates, I can handle battery drainage by insane power throttle which is active in recent kernel versions, but not being able to shut down/reboot because system is hanging AFTER command is issued and all tasks done... is a BIG one.

Hopefully this might reach some developers, as feedback, so these issues might get sorted out in some new iterations...

Solved all the issues. So in my case, that is latest one that has all working well: power throttling and poweroff/restart.

Starting a PC requires a lot of power from your laptop, your fans spin faster, and more power is required from your processor. So, if possible, it is better to leave it open when you take a break from work.
