USB devices stop working

Post by MathMachine4 »

Hi everyone. First of all, sorry for reposting this. I posted it, then realized I accidentally put it in the wrong forum section, then realized I couldn't change the forum section so I had to delete it and repost it in the right section.

So, I've been having a particular problem recently with my USB ports lately. I'll boot up my laptop, then after a few hours or so, my USB mouse will stop working. I'll unplug it, plug it back in, and it's all fine and dandy. Then, a few hours later, the same problem, fixed with the same solution. But eventually, after a few days of having not been restarted, the mouse will just flat out not work anymore. The touchpad will work, but the plug-in mouse won't. I've tried plugging in other mice, still the same problem. I've tried plugging in non-mouse stuff (such as a flash drive) into the USB, they don't work either. The only way I've found to fix this issue is to restart the computer. And after I do that, the issue will still eventually pop up again after a few days.

The odd thing is, while these devices aren't connecting, they are still receiving power from the laptop. As of right now, the issue has come up again, and while it might be different next time, it appears that while none of my mice's red optical sensors are lighting up, my gaming mouse is still letting off a rainbow glow whenever it's plugged in. Even though it's not doing anything, it's at the very least receiving power. Moreover, I have an iPhone charger which lights up whenever it's plugged into a power source. It lights up whenever I plug it into my laptop, but when I plug my phone into it, it doesn't charge. It doesn't even recognize that it's plugged into anything. Also, I've tried typing lsusb.

Results when a mouse is plugged in:

I have two USB ports, one USB-C port, one SD port, one HDMI port, one headphone jack, and one ethernet port. I've tested all of them except for the USB-C port (since I don't have anything new enough to use USB type C), and the only ones that seem to be affected by this bug are the two USB ports and also my SD card reader (though I actually haven't checked that slot until today).

It seems like it should be no coincidence that the USB ports and the SD card reader are on the same side of the computer, but I actually don't think this is a hardware issue. For an unrelated project involving upgrading my storage, I recently opened up my laptop, and while I was there, I decided to check the USB slots. Sure enough, the ribbon cables were completely plugged in and there were no obvious issues. That said, this is a dual boot, and I don't know yet if the same problem occurs on the Windows boot. Mostly because I haven't used the Windows boot continuously for long enough to see if the same issue is occurring.

If you need any more information, please ask. Though I might end up having to restart my computer soon, after which all the bugs will (probably) reset, so...yeah...better ask those questions soon? Actually, I'm almost scared of closing my laptop. Because sometimes, when this bug happens, if I suspend my laptop, it'll fail to unsuspend. It'll print out an error, saying it failed to load the startup screen, then tell me "it's okay, we can just open your computer via the command line!". Which....works? But, like, the entire GUI is disabled! And the only way to run anything from that point is via command line! Which basically just means "restart your computer, dummy!".

To be fair, it doesn't take too long to restart my computer, but this is my main computer, and I hate having to perpetually deal with this connectivity issue every single day. And I especially hate when it escalates to the point of doing this nonsense! It's annoying! Also, again, this issue only started recently. Like, within the past 2-3 weeks, I think.

Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Okay, update, I tried using the mouse when it was briefly disconnected.

This is what happened when I typed lsusb during that:

Code: Select all

Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 005: ID 0bda:b00a Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
Bus 003 Device 004: ID 30c9:0035 ELAN ELAN:ARM-M4
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 05e3:0608 Genesys Logic, Inc. Hub
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 04f3:0c00 Elan Microelectronics Corp. ELAN:ARM-M4
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 064: ID 275d:0ba6 USB OPTICAL MOU
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Whereas this is what it said after it had reconnected:

Code: Select all

Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 005: ID 0bda:b00a Realtek Semiconductor Corp.

I am no Linux guru but I had something similar on an old Intel media machine with the USB throwing wobblies intermittently. In the end I accepted that it was probably a hardware fault and changed the board. Having had some experience with hardware in the past your problem sounds suspiciously like hardware to me. The only other possibility apart from the USB system itself is that the power supply is on its limit, but I would have thought that you would get some more fundamental problems and they wouldn't be confined to the USB stuff. Just a thought.
