Kernel 5.13 to 5.15

Post by Jeronimo17 »

It is already forced to move to 5.15.0-41 from 5.13.0-52?, 5.15 doesn't work very well, sometimes the mouse freezes like when I open a program with wine, which never happens with 5.13.

The 5.13 kernel goes end of life next month, but it is still receiving support right now so you can still use it.

Very most likely there will arrive newer builds of 5.15 in the next weeks.

Even if you're using an unsupported kernel: the practical risks of that are usually low to very low. The risky packages that always need to be up to date, are things like your web browsers etc.

Next month there is likely to be a newer version of the 5.15 kernel available.

Whenever you have problems with kernels, you can report them through the link available in Update Manager. To reach that link, in Update Manager select View > Linux kernels and click Continue. You then select a kernel series on the left panel to see all the installation options on the right panel. Click a kernel number on the right panel to see the links. The first link is "Bug reports" and takes you to a page listing what bugs have been reported so far for that kernel. In the upper right of that page is the link to create a new bug report if you do not see your issue listed.

Linux Mint Main Edition does not use mainline kernels so the information in the link you posted does not apply to this topic. Canonical maintains the kernels used in Linux Mint Main Edition.

Here GIF with what happens on the mouse, when I open anything from wine or Steam for example. It only happens from 5.15 onwards

Does it only happen with wine or Steam? Or does it happen with other applications?

Of the ones I've tried, I've only noticed it clearly with wine and Steam a little, not in others, I don't know if it has something to do with the 32 bit (I'm back to 5.13).

So it is more likely an issue with wine rather than an issue with the kernel. A kernel issue would be affecting everything. I do not use wine so I do not have any ideas of what might help.

I noticed in this post one person mentioned an issue related to wine in LM21, but I don't know if the kernel is a factor (LM21 uses the 5.15 kernel) or something else in LM21 is a factor in that wine issue.

But Steam is native and is also affected, I see neither high CPU nor hard disk load when it happens.

Steam is an application that you added to your Linux Mint install. Steam is not part of Linux Mint.

I do not use Steam so I don't know if they make guarantees about certain versions working on Ubuntu or Linux Mint.

But I'm giving you another example of the same thing happening with a program that doesn't use Wine, but I think they share that they are 32 bit.

I do not know what you want to get, I tell you that with 5.13 I have no problem with anything and changing to 5.15 is giving me problems with the mouse, Wine and others programs, I have not gotten to test it thoroughly ... and I do not know where the problem comes from.

You are having a problem with the mouse with all programs or just with those two you mentioned?

What type of mouse is it-wired or wireless?

As I mentioned earlier I do not use WINE or Steam so I can not give specifics, but, if they have a places where errors are recorded, that might be something to check for a clue as to what is happening.
