Linux mint not shutting down....

Post by 11jar11 »

I came home from shopping and my wife said she might have screwed up. I looked at the screen and saw (initramfs) _

Not sure what to do at this point.

Thanks for any help.

At first glance and with the information we have (and also don't have), it might very well be a corrupted filesystem. This can happen for example on a laptop without battery and the power goes off suddenly and the drive does not have the time to discharge all the data from memory into it.

Can you ask your wife what happened? Did the power go out, the computer crashed, etc.?

If data corruption is the case here, it might be easily fixable.
When you turn your computer on you will see a menu (it's called the GRUB menu) asking you to chose your operating system and usually has a 10 seconds countdown.
You should be able to see a 2nd option like in this image:

https://think.unblog.ch/wp-content/uplo ... b_menu.png

Select the Advanced Options for Linux Mint option.
Your Linux Mint version, if different, does not matter here.

You'll be taken to a 2nd menu. Again, you should have a 2nd option in the likes of:
Linux Mint 21 Cinnamon, with Linux 5.15.0-126-generic (recovery mode) (on /dev/sda1)

Emphasis on the recovery mode.

Select that option.
Your computer should boot with a lot of scrolling text and end up on a text menu something like this one:

https://www.itzgeek.com/wp-content/uplo ... covery.png

Your menu might be somewhat different but the option that matters here is the fsck one: (above the red line)

fsck Check all file systems (will exit read-only mode)

If you get to this point and this runs you'll eventually be able to fix this.
I don't have all those menus in my mind but in the end there should be some way to reboot the system and your computer should be back again as normal.

Any doubts, just let us know. If you could take photos of the screen with your phone and post them here, it will help a lot.

If this procedure doesn't fix it or it doesn't even boot up until those text menus, your drive should have the data very corrupted. In that case, you might have to boot from CD or USB external media and then try it from that live session.
If you don't have an external CD or USB media you'll have to create it. Let us know if you need help and we'll guide you through.
Worst chances your OS has become so corrupted it might need to be reinstalled. In this case you'll need to boot from that CD or USB medium that, apart from reinstalling your OS, can be used first to rescue your documents.
We'll guide you through that one too if it's the case.
Cheers.
Bye for now,
Bruno
